The Battle of Irish Bend, also known as Nerson's Woods or Franklin, was a battle in the American Civil War. It was fought between Union Major General Nathaniel Prentice Banks against Confederate Major General Richard Taylor during Banks's operations against the Bayou Teche region near Franklin, the seat of St. Mary Parish in southern Louisiana. The 6th New York Infantry Regiment, also called "Wilson's Zouaves", was a unit of the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was organized at New York City on May 25, 1861. The 1st Louisiana Regiment Infantry was a regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The unit was organized at New Orleans, Louisiana, on July 30, 1862, and remained on duty there until January, 1863. They then moved to Baton Rouge where they remained until March, after which they participated in operations against Port Hudson, and in the Siege of Port Hudson culminating in the surrender on July 9, 1863. William Dwight
William Dwight Jr. (July 14, 1831 – April 21, 1888), was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Raised in Massachusetts, he came from a notable family of military leaders. Early life William Dwight was born July 14, 1831, in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father was William Dwight of the New England Dwight family who was born April 5, 1805. Dwight, Benjamin, 1874, vol.2 His mother was Elizabeth Amelia White, daughter of Judge Daniel Appleton White (1776–1861) and Mary Wilder (1780–1811). Dwight was the second born son in a family of seven sons, three of whom, besides himself, served in the American Civil War. The Army of the Gulf was a Union Army that served in the general area of the Gulf states controlled by Union forces. It mainly saw action in Louisiana and Alabama. History The Department of the Gulf was created following the capture of New Orleans by Admiral David G. Farragut in 1862. The commander of the Union occupation forces, Benjamin F. Butler, was placed in command of the department. In March, Butler assumed command of the department, and the Army of the Gulf was created from the troops now designated to the Department of the Gulf. The army saw little action the rest of 1862 and Butler was replaced by Major General Nathaniel P. Banks on December 17. Banks assumed command of the Department of the Gulf and the Army of the Gulf. The Battle of Fort Bisland was fought in the American Civil War between Union Major General Nathaniel P. Banks against Confederate Major General Richard Taylor during Banks' operations against the Bayou Teche region in southern Louisiana. Grand Lake is a freshwater lake located in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. The lake is not located in the community of Grand Lake, Louisiana.
