John Putnam Batchelder
John Putnam Batchelder (August 6, 1784 – April 8, 1868) was an American surgeon and anatomist. Biography Batchelder was born in Wilton, New Hampshire, August 6, 1784, into the wealthy family of Archelaus Batchelder; he died in New York City, April 8, 1868. He was a great-nephew of Gen. Israel Putnam through his mother Betsey who was Putnam's niece. After an academic education, he began the study of medicine, and in 1807 was licensed to practice. He did not receive the degree of M. D., however, until 1815, after attendance on the lectures of Harvard Medical School. He began practice in Charlestown, New Hampshire, removed thence to Pittsfield, Massachusetts; afterward to Utica, New York, and in 1843 to New York City. Batchelder House (Reading, Massachusetts)
The Batchelder House is a historic house at 607 Pearl Street in Reading, Massachusetts. Built about 1783, it is a good local example of Federal period architecture. It is also significant for its association with the locally prominent Batchelder family, and as an early shoemaking site. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Batchelder House stands in a residential area of northern Reading, at the southeast corner of Pearl and Franklin Streets. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. It has a large central chimney and a symmetrical five-bay front facade, which is oriented facing south. At the center of the facade is the main entrance, which has a Greek Revival surround of sidelight windows and pilasters supporting an entablature and peaked cornice. Batchelder House (Pasadena, California)
The Batchelder House is a historic home built in 1910 and located at 626 South Arroyo Boulevard in Pasadena, California. An important center of Pasadena cultural life in its day, the home was designed and built by Ernest A. Batchelder, a prominent leader of the Arts and Crafts Movement, and his wife, Alice Coleman, an accomplished musician. The house, a large bungalow, has a "woodsy" design with elements of a Swiss chalet style. Batchelder's first craft shop was located in the structure, where decorative tiles were made for Greene and Greene, the Heineman Brothers, and other noted local architects of the era. Coleman also used the house's backyard stage to host chamber music concerts. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 14, 1978. James Batchelder
James Batchelder (1830–1854) was the third United States Marshal to be killed in the line of duty. Batchelder was a truckman employed by the Marshals, and assigned to stand guard at the Boston Court House, where Anthony Burns, an escaped slave captured by slave-hunters, was imprisoned. President Franklin Pierce was determined to turn over an escaped slave from Boston - a center of abolitionist activity - in order to show Southern politicians that Northern states would enforce the Fugitive Slave Act, a key provision of the Compromise of 1850. On the night of May 26, 1854, a crowd of black and white Bostonians, planning to rescue Burns, tried to force the doors of the Court House with axes, and a long plank used as a battering ram. Charles Foster Batchelder (July 20, 1856 – November 7, 1954) was an American ornithologist and naturalist. He was an early member and President of the American Ornithologists' Union, and of the Nuttall Ornithological Club. He also edited ''The Auk'', and before it, the ''Bulletin of the Nuttall Ornithological Club''. Biography Batchelder was born to Francis Lowell Batchelder and Susan Cabot Foster-Batchelder, and grew up next to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a youngster, he developed a friendship with a number of future figures in ornithology, such as William Brewster, Henry Wetherbee Henshaw, Henry Augustus Purdie, Charles Johnson Maynard and William Earl Dodge Scott. Hiram Treat Batchelder (December 14, 1838 – May 15, 1911) was the second List of mayors of Chico, California, President of the Chico Board of Trustees, the governing body of the city of Chico, California from 1873 to 1876.
