Batchelder House (Reading, Massachusetts)
The Batchelder House is a historic house at 607 Pearl Street in Reading, Massachusetts. Built about 1783, it is a good local example of Federal period architecture. It is also significant for its association with the locally prominent Batchelder family, and as an early shoemaking site. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Batchelder House stands in a residential area of northern Reading, at the southeast corner of Pearl and Franklin Streets. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a gabled roof and clapboarded exterior. It has a large central chimney and a symmetrical five-bay front facade, which is oriented facing south. At the center of the facade is the main entrance, which has a Greek Revival surround of sidelight windows and pilasters supporting an entablature and peaked cornice. Reading ( ) is a town in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, north of central Boston. The population was 25,518 at the 2020 census. History Settlement and American independence Many of the Massachusetts Bay Colony's original settlers arrived from England in the 1630s through the ports of Lynn and Salem. In 1639 some citizens of Lynn petitioned the government of the colony for a "place for an inland plantation". They were initially granted six square miles, followed by an additional four. The first settlement in this grant was at first called "Lynn Village" and was located on the south shore of the "Great Pond", now known as Lake Quannapowitt. On June 10, 1644 the settlement was incorporated as the town of Reading, taking its name from the town of Reading in England. The first church was organized soon after the settlement, and the first parish separated and became the town of "South Reading" in 1812, renaming itself as Wakefield in 1868. Alden Batchelder House
The Alden Batchelder House is a historic house in Reading, Massachusetts. Built in the early 1850s, it is an excellent example of an early Italianate design. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Description and history The Alden Batchelder House stands north of downtown Reading, on a triangular parcel of land at the junction of Main Street ( Massachusetts Route 28) and Charles Street, across Main Street from the Laurel Hill Cemetery. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a side-gable roof and clapboarded exterior. It is oriented facing south, and is screened from the streets on either side by trees; a stone retaining wall lines the properties eastern and western sides. The roof has relatively deep eaves, studded with a few single decorative brackets. Description and history The George Batchelder House stands in northern Reading, on the north side of Franklin Street just east of its junction with Main Street ( Massachusetts Route 28). The house was originally oriented facing Main Street, and was moved a short distance to its present location in 1947. It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a side low-pitch gable roof, two interior chimneys, and a clapboarded exterior. The house exhibits a few more high-style Federal period details than are typical for surviving houses in Reading of the period, including an elaborate entrance surround with tapered pilasters, sidelight windows, and a half-oval starburst louver above. Description and history The Nathaniel Batchelder House stands in a residential area of northern Reading, on the north side of Franklin Street just east of its junction with Pearl Street. It is a -story timber-frame structure, with a side-gable roof, two interior chimneys, clapboarded exterior, and stone foundation.
