Basilica Della Santissima Annunziata Del Vastato
The Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato is the Catholic cathedral of Genoa, northern Italy; its decoration employed the major baroque studios and artists in Genoa in the 17th century. It is named ''Vastato'' because the area where it was built was outside the walls of the city, in an area where houses had been demolished (devastated) for defensive reasons. In Latin, referred to a safety belt within the protective bastions. History The church was begun by the Franciscans in 1520 in a site previously occupied by the small church of ''Santa Maria del Prato'', belonging to the Humiliati. Works were however halted in 1537, and in 1591 the Lomellini family continued the reconstruction, directed by Taddeo Carlone. In the early 17th century the rich Baroque decoration was executed, with Andrea Ansaldo in charge of completing the works, and in particular the dome. Giovanni Bernardo Carbone
Giovanni Bernardo Carboni (12 May 1614 – 11 March 1683) (also Carbone) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. Biography He was born in Albaro, near Genoa. He became a pupil of Giovanni Andrea de Ferrari and he was likely a contemporary in the studio with two other Ferrari pupils: Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione and Giovanni Andrea Podesta. Other influences on his style came from trips to Venice of c. 1643–4 and 1650, his friendships with Valerio Castello and Casone, as well as the contact with his prolific brother and painter, Giovanni Battista Carlone. He best known as a portrait painter, usually in full-length or three quarters view; his portraits are mainly of aristocracy dressed in full regalia or shown amid items of their property in the manner of Anthony van Dyck. Giovanni Battista Carlone (1603–1684) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period, active mainly in Genoa. Biography Carlone was born and died in Genoa. He came from a family of artists: his father Taddeo, uncle, and cousins were sculptors, and his older brother Giovanni Bernardo Carlone was a painter, trained in Rome and married to the daughter of Bernardo Castello. Giovanni Bernardo, however, died at age 40. Giovanni Carlone
Giovanni Bernardo Carlone (1590–1630) was an Italian painter of the late-Mannerist and early-Baroque periods. He was born in Genoa. He was the son of Taddeo Carlone, a sculptor and historical painter, who placed him under the tuition of Pietro Sorri, and he afterwards frequented the school of Domenico Passignano at Florence. He returned to Genoa was much employed there and at Rome and Florence. He assisted his younger brother, Giovanni Battista Carlone in the immense fresco work in the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato at Genoa, and was invited to Milan to paint the ceiling of the church of the Theatines, which he did not live to finish. Giulio Benso
Giulio Benso (30 October 1592 – 1668) was a Genovese painter of the early Baroque. He is known as one of the followers of the style of Luca Cambiasi. Benso was born in Pieve di Teco. Initially under the patronage of Giovanni Carl Doria, he met Giulio Cesare Procaccini and was encouraged to study in the Genovese ''Accademia del Nudo''. Afterwards, he was apprenticed to Giovanni Battista Paggi. Apart from his work in Liguria, he decorated the Palazzo Grimaldi in Cagnes-sur-Mer with the ''Fall of Phaeton'' and sent works to the Abbey of Weingarten in Germany. In the 1640s, he completed his masterpiece, a fresco in the presbytery and apse of the church of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato. Giulio Cesare Procaccini
Giulio Cesare Procaccini (1574–1625) was an Italian painter and sculptor of the early Baroque era in Milan. Biography Born in Bologna he was son of the Mannerist painter Ercole Procaccini the Elder and brother of Camillo Procaccini and Carlo Antonio Procaccini. The family moved to Milan around 1585 with the help of the rich art collector Pirro Visconti. He began as a sculptor in the Cathedral and in the Milanese church of Santa Maria presso San Celso. In 1610 he painted six of the '' Quadroni'', large canvases celebrating Saint Charles Borromeo. Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo
Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo (1584 – August 18, 1638) was an Italian painter active mainly in Genoa. Life Ansaldo was born in Voltri, now part of the ''comune'' of Genoa, the son of a merchant. He trained under Orazio Cambiasi and possibly collaborated with Bernardo Strozzi. Two of his pupils were Giuseppe Badaracco and Bartolomeo Bassi. One of his descendants was Innocenzo Ansaldo of Pescia (February 12, 1734- February 16, 1816). He died in Genoa and was probably buried in the same Annunziata church.
