Barwon Downs is a town in Victoria, Australia. The town is located in the foothills of the Otway Ranges, south west of the state capital, Melbourne. The township was proclaimed on 10 May 1910. In the , Barwon Downs had a population of 131. The main industries in the area are agriculture, forestry and tourism. The town has a church, tennis courts and public hall. Barwon Downs also has a local Country Fire Authority (CFA) with members from the local community. The electoral district of Polwarth is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. Otway Ranges
The Great Otway National Park is a national park located in the Barwon South West region of Victoria, Australia. The national park is situated approximately southwest of Melbourne, in the Otway Ranges, a low coastal mountain range. It contains a diverse range of landscapes and vegetation types. History Commercial logging began in the Otway Ranges in the 1880s. After World War One, with improvements to the roads and railways, logging increased massively, peaking in 1961, almost entirely stripping the Otway Ranges of its old-growth forest and causing land degradation issues, but has since been greatly reduced. Separation Creek, Victoria
Separation Creek is a small coastal locality in the Shire of Colac Otway, Victoria, Australia. In the 2016 census, Separation Creek had a population of 19. The village is situated at the mouth of the Separation Creek, on the Great Ocean Road, which follows the coast through the locality. There are no shops at Separation Creek; the nearest shop and hotel is located at Wye River, which is connected to the town by the Great Ocean Road and on foot by Paddys Path. In July 2014, the federal government announced a $4m upgrade of the Separation Creek bridge, with a new pedestrian walkway across the creek to allow for safer access between the towns. Lorne is a seaside town on Louttit Bay in Victoria, Australia. It is situated about the Erskine River and is a popular destination on the Great Ocean Road tourist route. Lorne is in the Surf Coast Shire and at the had a population of 1,114 but this figure grows during the holiday season. History Prior to British settlement, Lorne was part of the traditional lands of the Gadubanud or King Parrot people of the Cape Otway coast according to Ian Clark, although many popular websites report that the area was occupied by the Kolakngat Aborigines. The division was proclaimed in 1900, and was one of the original 65 divisions to be contested at the first federal election. Benwerrin, Victoria
Benwerrin is a rural locality in the Surf Coast Shire, Victoria, Australia. The original 1840s main track to Lorne passed through Benwerrin. The track was resurfaced with bluestone in 1877, but eventually bypassed for an easier alignment to the coast. Some remnants of the former track remain today, and are listed on the Surf Coast Shire's heritage inventory. Benwerrin Post Office opened on 1 November 1886 and closed on 30 June 1927. Coal was found at Benwerrin in 1895, when mining began there on a small scale. The Great Western Coal Company being formed to mine it in 1897, and it initially carried the coal to Deans Marsh railway station by wagon. A second company was formed to build a tramway to the Forrest railway line in September 1898, but it went into liquidation by March 1899. Forrest is a small rural township in the Otway Ranges, Victoria, Australia. At the 2016 census, Forrest and the surrounding area had a population of 230. History The History of Forrest started more than 40,000 years ago. Forrest is at the northern end of the Otway Ranges. Historically, the Otway Ranges are the land of the Gadubanud people. The current boundaries of the Otway Shire Council partially include land belonging to the tribes of Gadubanud people and Gulidjan.
