The men's discus throw event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place between 30 and 31 July 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Approximately 35 athletes were expected to compete; the exact number depended on how many nations use universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 32 qualifying through distance or ranking (no universality places were used in 2016). 32 athletes from 24 nations competed. Daniel Ståhl of Sweden won gold, with his countryman Simon Pettersson earning silver. It was the first victory in the event for Sweden and the first men's discus throw medal of any color for the nation since 1972. Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics were held during the last ten days of the Games. They were due to be held from 31 July – 9 August 2020, at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, Japan. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the games were postponed to 2021, with the track and field events set for 30 July – 8 August. The sport of athletics at these Games was split into three distinct sets of events: track and field events, remaining in Tokyo, and road running events and racewalking events, moved to Sapporo. 2019 World Athletics Championships – Men's Discus Throw
The men's discus throw at the 2019 World Athletics Championships was held at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha from 28 to 30 September 2019. Summary Coming in to these championships, Daniel Ståhl dominated the season both with the best throw and the best group of throws. A full metre behind him was Fedrick Dacres and Lukas Weißhaidinger was a further two and a half metres behind him. That form held true in the qualifying round as Ståhl was the only automatic qualifier. As the first thrower, Ståhl set the early standard with a 66.59m. Near the end of the round, Weißhaidinger answered with a 66.74m to take the first round lead. Starting the second round, Ståhl answered back with a 67.18m. The 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships () was the seventeenth edition of the biennial, global athletics competition organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), since renamed World Athletics. It was held between 27 September and 6 October 2019 in Doha, Qatar, at the renovated multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium, but reduced to 21,000 available seats. 1,772 athletes from 206 teams competed in 49 athletics events over the ten-day competition, comprising 24 events each for men and women, plus a mixed relay.
