Barry St. John
Eliza Janet Thomson (November 1943 – 24 July 2020), who recorded as Barry St. John, was a Scottish female singer who had a No. 47 hit in the UK Singles Chart in December 1965 with "Come Away Melinda". It was her only solo chart success. Biography Born and raised in Gallowgate, Glasgow, Scotland, Liz Thomson sang from a young age, and joined local beat music, beat group, Bobby Patrick's Big Six, before they moved to London in January 1962. The group toured Germany and played clubs in Hamburg, before Thompson decided to start a solo career and returned to England. As Barry St. John, she signed with Decca Records in 1964 and released her first single, a version of the Jarmels' "A Little Bit of Soap". Her follow-up, a cover version of the Newbeats' hit "Bread and Butter (The Newbeats song), Bread and Butter", made the German pop chart later that year. Gallowgate, Glasgow
Gallowgate is a neighbourhood of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. It takes its name from the major thoroughfare through the territory, which is part of the A89 road. Administratively, it is part of the Calton ward of the Glasgow City Council area. Bread And Butter (The Newbeats Song)
"Bread and Butter" is a 1964 song by American pop vocal trio the Newbeats. Written by Larry Parks and Jay Turnbow, "Bread and Butter" was the group's first and most popular hit. "Bread and Butter" served as the Newbeats' demo in an effort to obtain a recording contract with Hickory Records. They were then asked to formally record the track for the label. The opening two-chord piano riff and the lead falsetto singing voice of Larry Henley are notable features of the song. Soon the song was sampled in the Dickie Goodman novelty tune "Presidential Interview (Flying Saucer '64)". "Bread and Butter" was the inspiration for the advertising jingle of Schmidt Baking Company used in the 1970s and 1980s; it went: ''"I like bread and butter, I like toast and jam, I like Schmidt's Blue Ribbon Bread, It's my favorite brand"''. La Booga Rooga
''La Booga Rooga'' was the second solo album by Andy Fairweather Low, and was released by A&M Records in 1975. It was Fairweather Low's most successful album, with an eclectic musical styling. The opening track was a cover of Clarence Williams' 1933 penned track " My Bucket's Got a Hole in It", which incorporated steel guitar playing by B. J. Cole. Another offering, "Champagne Melody", was styled as lounge music, whilst the album's funk-driven title track became a minor UK hit in March 1976, when covered by an Australian female vocal group, The Surprise Sisters. The album also contained Fairweather Low's biggest selling single, " Wide Eyed and Legless", which reached No. 6 in the UK Singles Chart at Christmas time in 1975. Andrew Fairweather Low (born 2 August 1948) is a Welsh guitarist and singer. He was a founding member and lead singer of 1960s pop band Amen Corner (band), Amen Corner, and in recent years has toured extensively with Roger Waters, Eric Clapton and Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings. Professional Career Fairweather Low was born in Ystrad Mynach, Wales, to working-class parents. The family, including his two brothers, lived in an "unheated council house" on an estate; his father, a road sweeper, was unable to afford a car. Fairweather Low's first opportunity to play guitar came when he took a Saturday job at a music shop in Cardiff. He achieved fame as a founding member of the pop group Amen Corner (band), Amen Corner in the late 1960s. ''The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper's Feast'' is a concept album and subsequent live rock opera appearing in 1974 and 1975 respectively, based on the children's poem of a similar title. The album cover design is from Alan Aldridge's design for a 1973 book based on the poem. Origin and production history The work was originally conceived as a solo vehicle for Jon Lord to be produced by Roger Glover who had recently left Deep Purple. However, Lord proved too busy with Deep Purple, and Glover took up the reins on his own. Using his connections, Glover recruited a large cast of noted rock musicians, with a different vocalist for each character, including David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. ''Tanx'' is a 1973 album by rock band T. Rex, the eighth since their debut as Tyrannosaurus Rex in 1968, and the fourth under the moniker T. Rex. It was released on 16 March by record label EMI. ''Tanx'' was a musical departure from previous works: still containing tracks in the vein of '' The Slider'', singer and songwriter Marc Bolan showed his interest for soul music, funk and gospel. The Les Humphries Singers was a 1970s pop group formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1969 by the English-born Les Humphries. The group had several chart hits in Germany and in other European countries. The Les Humphries Singers dissolved at the end of the 1970s and Humphries moved back to England. Members Les Humphries was born John Leslie Humphreys on 10 August 1940 in Croydon, Surrey, England. Michael Joseph Pasternak (born 26 December 1942), known by his stage name Emperor Rosko, is an American presenter of rock music programmes, most widely known for his shows on Radio Caroline and BBC Radio 1 in the UK in the 1960s and early 1970s. Early life Born in Los Angeles, California, he is the son of Hollywood film producer Joe Pasternak. He was influenced in his career choice by KYA Radio disc jockeys Lord Tim Hudson and Wolfman Jack in Los Angeles. Pasternak's opportunity to broadcast came when he was in the US Navy, where he presented a show on the aircraft carrier , using the name Michael Prescott.
