Barrie Flyers (1966–1979)
The Barrie Flyers were a Canadian men's senior ice hockey team from Barrie, Ontario. They were members of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) and played in the OHA Senior A Hockey League from 1966 to 1979, then in the Major Intermediate A Hockey League from 1979 to 1983. The name Barrie Flyers was previously used by a junior ice hockey team from 1945 to 1960. History The Barrie Flyers won the J. Ross Robertson Cup as OHA Senior A League champions in 1972, 1974, 1975 and 1976. The Flyers won the 1974 Allan Cup as Canadian Senior A champions, beating the Cranbrook Royals 4-2 in the playdown final, and were national finalists in 1972, 1975 and 1976. They moved to the Major Intermediate A Hockey League in 1979 and played there until the league folded in 1983. Barrie
Barrie is a city in Southern Ontario, Canada, about north of Toronto. The city is within Simcoe County and located along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, the western arm of Lake Simcoe. Although physically in Simcoe County, Barrie is politically independent. The city is part of the extended urban area in southern Ontario known as the Greater Golden Horseshoe. As of the 2021 census, the city's population was 147,829, while the census metropolitan area had a population of 212,667 residents. The Spokane Jets were a senior men's ice hockey team that played out of Spokane, Washington. They played in the Western International Hockey League (WIHL) from 1963-64 through 1973-74. Prior to 1963 the Spokane Flyers were the city's entry in the WIHL. The Spokane Jets were renamed the Flyers in 1974. Bob Perani
Robert "Bob" F. Perani (August 7, 1942 – April 15, 2012) was a professional ice hockey goaltender for the Flint Generals in the International Hockey League. He was also the founder of Perani's Hockey World sports retail chain in 1976, and owned the naming rights for the Perani Arena and Event Center. Perani died on April 15, 2012 while traveling on an international flight from Detroit to Tokyo. Perani was born in Italy in 1942 and moved to Canada with his family in 1953, settling near Toronto. He attended St. Lawrence University where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He played for a number of leagues in Michigan and Ontario. He and his wife Kris moved to Flint in the late 1960s and never left. Kris died from cancer in 2006.The following year, as part of the 'Perani Group', he bought the Flint Generals. Bob Dupuis
Robert A. Dupuis (born August 26, 1952) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender who played one game in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Edmonton Oilers during the 1979–80 season. The Oilers lost 5-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers on March 9, 1980, with Dupuis conceding four of those goals. Dupuis was one of six goalies used by the Oilers during the season. Dupuis represented Canada at the 1980 Winter Olympics held in Lake Placid, where he was the goalie in three games; a win versus the Netherlands, and two losses in decisive games against Finland and Czechoslovakia. Prior to 1980, he had played for five years in the senior Ontario Hockey Association with the Cambridge Hornets and Barrie Flyers, and had previous experience in junior B ( North Bay Trappers) and semi-pro minor leagues.
