Barrackpore Trunk Road
Barrackpore Trunk Road, commonly known as BT Road, is a four- and six-lane trunk road in Kolkata metropolitan area, West Bengal, India. It connects Kolkata with its suburb Barrackpore. Built in 1775, it is the oldest metalled road and one of the busiest roads in the country. The long road is a part of both State Highway 1 and State Highway 2. Barrackpore Trunk Road has multiple institutes and other landmarks along it, including the Indian Statistical Institute and Rabindra Bharati University. Once the areas around the road were industrial zones, but gradually, residential areas sprawled and replaced the industries. The city's 160-year-old water supply pipeline runs under the road. Barrackpore (also known as Barrackpur) is a city and a municipality of urban Kolkata of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is also a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). It is the headquarters of the Barrackpore subdivision. Etymology The name Barrackpore may have originated from the English word barracks, as it was the site of the first cantonment of the British East India Company. State Highway 2 (SH 2) is a state highway in West Bengal, India. Route SH 2 originates from its junction with NH 14 at Bankura and passes through Indpur, Hatimrampur, Khatra, Simlapal, Taldangra, Bishnupur, Jaypur, Kotulpur, Arambag, Champadanga, Tarakeswar, Singur, Baidyabati, Dankuni, Uttarpara, Baranagar, Dakshineswar, Barrackpore, Barasat, Berachampa, Kholapota, Basirhat, Taki and terminates at its junction with SH 3 at Malancha in North 24 Parganas district. Dunlop ( bn, ডানলপ) is a neighbourhood in Baranagar, North 24 Parganas district, in the Indian state of West Bengal. Close to Kolkata, it is under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) and Barrackpore Police Commissionerate. Sinthee or Sinthi is a neighbourhood of North Kolkata in Kolkata district, West Bengal, India. History The East India Company obtained from the Mughal emperor Farrukhsiyar, in 1717, the right to rent from 38 villages surrounding their settlement. Of these 5 lay across the Hooghly in what is now Howrah district. The remaining 33 villages were on the Calcutta side. After the fall of Siraj-ud-daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, it purchased these villages in 1758 from Mir Jafar and reorganised them. These villages were known en-bloc as ''Dihi Panchannagram'' and Sinthee was one of them. It was considered to be a suburb beyond the limits of the Maratha Ditch. Baranagar Metro Station
Baranagar metro station is a metro railway station off Barrackpore Trunk Road at Dunlop of Baranagar in Kolkata. Presently, this metro station is the tallest metro station of Kolkata (approximately 55 feet). The metro station adjoins the platforms of the Baranagar Road railway station where connections can be made with Indian Railways services. This station is also known as "Swami Vivekananda metro station". The station was inaugurated on 22 February 2021. History Then in February 2019, the metro line to the Dakshineswar station was projected to be operational by February 2020.
