Baron Cochrane Of Cults
Baron Cochrane of Cults, of Crawford Priory in the County of Fife, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1919 for the Liberal Unionist politician and former Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department, the Hon. Thomas Cochrane. He was the second and youngest son of Thomas Barnes Cochrane, 11th Earl of Dundonald. the title is held by the first Baron's great-grandson, the fifth Baron, who succeeded his father in that year. Two other members of this branch of the Cochrane family have also gained distinction. Captain the Hon. Sir Archibald Douglas Cochrane, second son of the first Baron, was a naval commander and politician. Air Chief Marshal the Hon. Sir Ralph Cochrane, youngest son of the first Baron, was a notable Royal Air Force commander. Crawford Priory
Crawford Priory is an estate house about 2 miles south west of Cupar, Fife, based on private land with no single owner. It is a former residence of the Earls of Crawford, Earls of Glasgow and Barons Cochrane of Cults. It lies just outside the village of Springfield. Originally built as Crawford Lodge by the 21st Earl of Crawford in 1758, it was substantially enlarged and extended in the early nineteenth century by a sister of the 22nd Earl, Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford. Lady Mary engaged architects David Hamilton, and then James Gillespie Graham, to redesign the building in the gothic style, adding buttresses, turrets and pinnacles effecting the look of a priory, although it had had no religious history.Gifford, John (1988) ''Fife'' (Buildings of Scotland series), Penguin. Baron Lamington
Baron Lamington, of Lamington in the County of Lanark, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1880 for Alexander Baillie-Cochrane, a long-standing Conservative Member of Parliament and old friend of Benjamin Disraeli. He was the son of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Thomas John Cochrane, son of Admiral the Honourable Sir Alexander Cochrane, sixth son of Thomas Cochrane, 8th Earl of Dundonald (see the Earl of Dundonald for earlier history of the Cochrane family). Lord Lamington was succeeded by his son, the second Baron. He represented St Pancras North in the House of Commons and served as Governor of Queensland and of Bombay. On his death the title passed to his son, the third Baron. He was childless and on his death in 1951 the barony became extinct. The Lamington cake is said to be named after the second baron. Earl of Dundonald is a title in the Peerage of Scotland. It was created in 1669 for the Scottish soldier and politician William Cochrane, 1st Lord Cochrane of Dundonald, along with the subsidiary title of Lord Cochrane of Paisley and Ochiltree, with remainder to his heirs male, failing which to his heirs female without division who should bear or assume the name of Cochrane, and in failure thereof to his heirs general. In 1647, he had already been created Lord Cochrane of Dundonald in the Peerage of Scotland, with remainder to the heirs male of his body.
