Barom Reachea II
Barom Reachea II (1579–1599), also known as Ponhea Ton ( km, ពញាតន់), was the Cambodian king ruled from 1597 to 1599. Ton was the second son of Satha I. In 1594, Cambodia was attacked by Siamese, he fled to Vientiane together with his father. He returned to Cambodia in 1597. With the help of Blas Ruiz and Diogo Veloso, he assumed power in May. Ton was persuaded to accept for Spanish protectorate. Diogo Veloso and Blaz Ruiz were appointed the governor of Ba Phnum (Prey Veng Province) and of Treang (Takéo Province) respectively. Satha I
Satha I (also spelled Sattha; km, សត្ថាទី១; 1539–1596), also known as Barom Reachea IV, was the Cambodian king ruled from 1576 to 1584. He was the eldest son of Barom Reachea III. During his reign, Blas Ruiz and Diogo Veloso came to Cambodia, both were trusted by the king and married Cambodian princesses. Two inscriptions in Angkor Wat indicated that some temples were restorated with the help of the royal family in 1577–1578. Satha I abdicated in favor of his son Chey Chettha I in 1584. The Siamese–Cambodian War (1591–1594), was a military conflict fought between the Ayutthaya Kingdom and the Kingdom of Cambodia. The war began in 1591 when Ayutthaya invaded Cambodia in response to continuous Khmer raids into their territory. The Kingdom of Cambodia was also facing religious disagreements within the country. This gave the Siamese a perfect opportunity to invade. The first invasion was interrupted before it achieved its goals. The Ayutthayan king Naresuan returned two years later, eventually subjugating the whole country and finally sacking the city Longvek on 3 January 1594. Diogo Veloso, or Diego Belloso in the Spanish historical accounts, (1558, Amarante, Portugal – 1599, Cambodia) was a Portuguese adventurer active in Southeast Asia in the last quarter of 16th century, acting sometimes in the service of the Spanish Governor of the Spanish East Indies (within the Cambodian–Spanish War) and sometimes as a freelancer. Ba Phnum ( km, បាភ្នំ, ), sometime spelled as Ba Phnom, is a district located in Prey Veng Province, in south eastern Cambodia. The hills surrounding the town are the highest elevation points in Prey Veng province. In Khmer, ''Ba'' means "ancestor" and ''Phnum'' means "hill."
