Barnum, West Virginia
Barnum is an unincorporated community and coal town in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States. It is part of the Cumberland, MD- WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Barnum lies on the North Branch Potomac River along a line of the Western Maryland Railroad no longer in operation. Barnum has excellent trout fishing along its banks and offers many opportunities for anglers. Barnum is located downstream from Jennings Randolph lake which is situated between West Virginia and Maryland on the North Branch of the Potomac River. The community has the name of William H. Charles Irving Elliott
Charles Irving "Sam" Elliott (1892–1972) was a pioneer aviator in the Hawaiian Islands. As an airline pilot, he is credited with the first scheduled passenger flight between the Hawaiian Islands, the first scheduled airmail flight between the Hawaiian Islands, and the first scheduled cargo flight in the US/Hawaiian Islands. Early life Elliott was born on November 13, 1892, in Barnum, West Virginia, to Fredrick and Susan (Blackburn) Elliott. Elliott had three younger sisters (Ruth, Lilly, and Myrtle) and two younger brothers (Francis and Donovan). His teenage years were spent in Seaside, Oregon, where he worked with his father as a carpenter. Elliott joined the US Navy in 1915 and married Christine E. William Henry Barnum
William Henry Barnum (September 17, 1818 – April 30, 1889) was an American politician, serving as a state representative, congressman, U.S. senator, and finally as chairman of the Democratic National Committee. He was also known as "Seven Mule Barnum". Life and career Barnum was born in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, the son of Laura (Tibbals) and Milo Barnum. Barnum moved to Lime Rock, Connecticut, and served in the state house of representatives from 1851 to 1852. He then served in the United States House of Representatives for Connecticut's 4th District from March 4, 1867, until his resignation on May 18, 1876. Barnum then became a U.S. senator, serving until March 3, 1879. He was chairman of the DNC from 1877 to 1889. He died in Lime Rock on April 30, 1889, and is buried in Lime Rock Cemetery. Western Maryland Railroad
The Western Maryland Railway was an American Class I railroad (1852–1983) which operated in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was primarily a coal hauling and freight railroad, with a small passenger train operation. The WM became a property of the Chessie System holding company in 1973, although it continued independent operations until May 1975 after which time many of its lines were abandoned in favor of parallel Baltimore and Ohio Railroad lines. North Branch Potomac River
The North Branch Potomac River flows from Fairfax Stone in West Virginia to its confluence with the South Branch Potomac River near Green Spring, West Virginia, where it turns into the Potomac River proper.
