Barishal Zilla School (), popularly known as BZS, is a public educational institution for boys, located in Barisal, Bangladesh. It was the first high school established in Barisal Division. It was founded as Barisal English School on 23 December 1829 by W. N. Garrett. It began with 27 students. In 1853, it was renamed Barisal Zilla School. Notable alumni * A. K. Barisal
Barisal ( or ; bn, বরিশাল, ), officially known as Barishal, is a major city that lies on the banks of the Kirtankhola river in south-central Bangladesh. It is the largest city and the administrative headquarter of both Barisal District and Barisal Division. It is one of the oldest municipalities and river ports of the country. Barisal municipality was established in the year 1876 during the British rule in India and upgraded to City Corporation on 25 July 2002. Barisal is Bangladesh's third largest information technology and financial hub. Buddhadeb Guha
Buddhadeb Guha (29 June 1936 – 29 August 2021) was an Indian writer of fiction in Bengali language. Apart from writing, he was a trained singer and a painter too. Career Born in Calcutta, Guha studied at St. Xavier's College of the University of Calcutta. He spent his early years in various districts of Eastern Bengal (now Bangladesh). Those days in Rangpur, Jaipurhat and Barisal are depicted in his Rivu series. Some of the ''Rivu'' books are dedicated to friends from his youth. He was also the creator of Rijuda, an imaginary character who explores jungles with his sidekick Rudra. The jungles that he wrote about were mainly in Eastern India. Siraj Sikder
Siraj Sikder (27 October 1944 – 2 January 1975) was a Bangladeshi revolutionary politician. Early life Sikder was born on 27 October 1944 in Bhedarganj, Shariatpur District, East Bengal. His father was Abdur Razzaq Sikder, and belonged to a Bengali Muslim zamindar family in Chhaygaon. After passing the matriculation examination from Barisal Zilla School in 1959, he was admitted into Barisal Brojomohun College in 1961 for I.Sc. He obtained an engineering degree from the East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (now BUET) in 1967. While he was a student he became a member of East Pakistan Student Union. Hafizuddin Ahmed
Bir Bikrom Hafizuddin Ahmed is a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician, a retired Bangladesh Army major, and a 6-term Jatiya Sangsad member representing the Bhola-3 constituency. He fought in the Bangladesh Liberation War and was awarded the third highest gallantry award in Bangladesh, the Bir Bikrom, for his courage. Bir Bikrom
Bir Bikrom ( bn, বীর বিক্রম, lit=Valiant hero, translit=) is the third highest gallantry award in Bangladesh. Like the other gallantry awards, this was introduced immediately after the Bangladeshi Liberation War. Bir Bikrom was awarded to 175 fighters. Recipients 175 fighters have been awarded on 15 December 1973 for their heroic actions at the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. The government of Bangladesh declared the name of the awardees in Bangladesh Gazette on 15 December 1973. This list has been prepared on the base of the Gazette. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury
Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury is the energy adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh since January 2009. Early life Chowdhury's ancestral home is in the village of Nateshwar in Beanibazar, Sylhet District. Chowdhury passed Secondary School Certificate exam from Barisal Zilla School in 1959 and HSC exam from Dhaka College in 1961. Promode Dasgupta (13 July 1910 – 29 November 1982) was an Indian Communist politician from West Bengal, often referred to as PDG. He was the first leader of the West Bengal unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), serving as State Secretary from the party's birth in 1964 until his death in 1982. He was also a member of the CPI(M)'s politburo, its supreme decision-making body. Although he personally never contested an election, Dasgupta earned a reputation as a disciplined organiser of the party and its cadres. Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury
Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury (born 9 September 1948) was a Bangladesh Army general who was 11th Chief of Army Staff of the Bangladesh Army from 16 June 2002 to 15 June 2005. He was the last officer to serve in this position who had first been commissioned by and served with the Pakistani Army, before the Liberation War of 1971. He served for two years before the war. Manzoor Alam Beg ( bn, মনজুর আলম বেগ; 1 October 193126 July 1998) was a Bangladeshi photographer. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2007 by the Government of Bangladesh.
