Barakar is a neighbourhood in Asansol, Paschim Bardhaman district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is governed by the Asansol Municipal Corporation It is situated at the border of the states of Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Grand Trunk Road passes through Barakar. Barakar River
The Barakar River is the main tributary of the Damodar River in eastern India. Originating near Padma in Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand it flows for across the northern part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau, mostly in a west to east direction, before joining the Damodar near Dishergarh in Asansol, Bardhaman district of West Bengal. It has a catchment area of . The main tributaries, Barsoti and Usri, flow in from the south and north respectively. Apart from the two main tributaries some fifteen medium or small streams join it. The Barakar skirts the northern portion of Parasnath Hills, above sea level, the highest hill in the region, located in Giridih district of Jharkhand and a centre of Jain pilgrimage. Asansol
Asansol is a (Tier-II) metropolitan city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the second largest and most populated city of West Bengal and the 33rd largest urban agglomeration in India. Asansol is the district headquarters of Paschim Bardhaman district. Asansol Municipal Corporation
Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) is the civic body that governs Asansol in Asansol Sadar subdivision of Paschim Bardhaman district, West Bengal, India. History Union Committees were set up in Asansol, Raniganj, Katwa and Kalna, according to a notification issued on 29 October 1850. These Union Committees carried out the functions of municipalities. Assensole (now Asansol) Municipality was set up on 1 July 1885, according to a notification dated 23 April 1885. Initially, the municipality covered the Railway Colony, the English area, Budhdanga village, Bastin’s Bazar, Pucca Bazar, Munshi Bazar and Talpukur Chati areas. Paschim Bardhaman District
Paschim Bardhaman district is a predominantly urban mining-industrial district in West Bengal. The headquarter of the district is Asansol. It was formed on 7 April 2017 after bifurcation of the erstwhile Bardhaman district as the 23rd district of West Bengal. Etymology Some historians link the name of the district to the 24th and last Jain ''tirthankara'', Mahavira Vardhamana, who came to preach in the area.
