National Film Award for Best Director ( bn, জাতীয় চলচ্চিত্র পুরস্কার) is the highest award for film directors in Bangladesh, presented annually at Bangladesh National Film Awards ceremony by the Ministry of Information. It is given in honour of a film director who has exhibited excellence directing in Bangladeshi cinema. Since 1975, the award is given annually except in 1981, 1998 and 2003. Cinema Of Bangladesh
The Bangladeshi Cinema, better known as Dhallywood ( bn, ঢালিউড), is the Bengali-language film industry based in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It has often been a significant film industry since the early 1970s. The dominant style of Bangladeshi cinema is melodramatic cinema, which developed from 1947 to 1990 and characterizes most films to this day. Cinema was introduced in Bangladesh in 1898 by the Bradford Bioscope Company, credited to have arranged the first film release in Bangladesh. Between 1913 and 1914, the first production company, Picture House, was opened. A 1928 short silent film titled ''Sukumari'' () was the first Bengali-produced film in the region. Bangladesh Film Censor Board is a regulatory agency that is responsible for the censorship of movies and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. History The censor board was set up in 1977 following the framing of Bangladesh Censorship of Film Rules. The agency is responsible for the censorship of locally produced movies, foreign imports and acts as the registration of film clubs in Bangladesh. Martuza Ahmed the secretary of Ministry of Information is the ex-officio chairman of the board. The board in 2015 blocked ''My Bicycle'', the first chakma language (a minority language) in Bangladesh. ''Surja Dighal Bari'' (''The Ominous House'') is a 1979 Bangladeshi feature film directed and produced by Sheikh Niamat Ali and Masihuddin Shaker. The screenplay was based on Abu Ishaque's 1955 novel of the same title. It was the first film made from the Government of Bangladesh grant. The film was first released in a theater in Natore. The film won Bangladesh National Film Award in 7 categories including Best Film, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actress. ''Golapi Ekhon Traine'' ( bn, গোলাপী এখন ট্রেনে, Gōlāpī Ekhon Trēnē, Golapi is now on a train - English name: The Endless Trail) is a Bangladeshi drama film based on the novel of Amjad Hossain ''Droupodi Ekhon Traine'' and directed by himself. Amjad Hossain
Amjad Hossain (14 August 1942 – 14 December 2018) was a Bangladeshi film director, actor, scriptwriter and lyricist. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director twice, for the films ''Golapi Ekhon Traine'' (1978) and '' Bhat De'' (1984). He also won Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2004 and Ekushey Padak in 1992. Career Hossain was born in Jamalpur on 14 August 1942. Hossain debuted his acting career in the film ''Tomar Amar'' (1961). He made his directorial debut as an assistant in the film ''Agun Niye Khela'' (1967). Filmography Personal life Hossain had two sons - Sajjad Hossain Dodul and Sohel Arman. Sohel was married to actress Tareen Jahan. Subhash Dutta (9 February 1930 – 16 November 2012) was a Bangladeshi filmmaker, theater and film actor. He started his career as a commercial artist. Career At the beginning of his career, Dutta worked as a film poster artist. He drew posters for Mukh O Mukhosh (1956), the first Bengali-language movie to be made in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He directed his first movie, Sutorang, in 1964. The movie won the second prize at the Frankfurt Festival in 1965. In 1972, he acted with the theatrical group, ''Aranyak Nattyadal''.
