Ballybay Pearse Brothers
Ballybay Pearse Brothers Gaelic Football Club is a Gaelic football club based in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland. History The club was founded as Ballybay GFC in 1906. The club is named after the brothers Patrick Pearse and Willie Pearse, executed after the 1916 Easter Rising. Their grounds, Pearse Park, opened in April 1951, the 35th anniversary of the Rising, and were commonly used for inter-county fixtures. Ballybay won their first senior trophy in 1952 by winning the league (Owen Ward Cup). In 1953 their first championship followed as the team captained by Paddy McKearney beat Donaghmoyne in the county final. A "golden age" followed, Ballybay winning six Monaghan Senior Football Championships in the years 1953-1969. In the fifties, together with neighbours and great rivals Clontibret, Ballybay were a dominant force in the hugely popular tournament football in Ulster and Leinster at the time. Ballybay
Ballybay () is a town and civil parish in County Monaghan, Ireland. The town is centred on the crossroads of the R183 and R162 regional roads. Geography The town is the meeting point for roads going to Monaghan, Castleblayney, Carrickmacross and Clones. The town grew up from the convergence of the roads. The town is built beside a large lake, Lough Major (In Irish "Lough Mór") and the smaller Lough Minor. The Dromore River also runs through the south of the town, past Pearse Brother's Football Grounds, and past the Riverdale Hotel. UCD GAA or University College Dublin Gaelic Athletic Association club is a Dublin based Gaelic games club in University College Dublin. The UCD hurling club was founded in 1900 and boasted the mottos "Ad Astra" and "Cothrom Féinne". The first team was an amalgamation of students from UCD and Cecilia St. Although UCD had been playing Gaelic football unofficially since 1900, the official club history began in the season of 1911/1912. Ryan Wylie is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Ballybay Pearse Brothers GAA, Ballybay Pearse Brothers (where his brothers Brent and Drew Wylie, Drew play with him), UCD GAA, UCD and at senior level for the Monaghan county football team, Monaghan county team. Drew Wylie
Drew Wylie is a Gaelic footballer who plays for Ballybay Pearse Brothers and at senior level for the Monaghan county team. He got himself an All-Star nom in 2013. Unusually for a Gaelic footballer, Wylie is actually a Protestant, which Cavan midfielder Gearoit McKiernan reminded him in the 2015 Dr McKenna Cup, instant red card for McKiernan from Sean Hurson over that, then a ban for bad language over what is believed to be a first, a red card used for racist or sectarian abuse. Paul Finlay
Paul Finlay is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for Ballybay Pearse Brothers. He played at senior level for the Monaghan county team between 2002 and 2016. Finlay is the son of former Monaghan footballer Kieran "Jap" Finlay. He won an All-Ireland title with the Monaghan Vocational Schools and played a role in Sligo IT's Sigerson Cup win in 2002. He has also won Minor and Intermediate medals with Ballybay Pearses. Finlay was first selected for the Monaghan senior team in 2003. He was regarded as the team's playmaker and participated in their 2005 National Football League Division Two win, Monaghan's first national title in twenty years. Kieran Finlay
Kieran "Jap" Finlay (died 2012) was a Gaelic footballer who played for Ballybay Pearse Brothers and at senior level for the Monaghan county team and the father of Paul Finlay. He had two Ulster Championship medals in his back pocket (from 1979 and 1985), a National League medal (from 1985) in his other pocket and four Dr McKenna Cup medals in another pocket and gave a particularly outstanding account of himself in the 1979 Ulster Final, helping himself to a goal and nine, only to get ill and die. Paddy Linden
Paddy Linden (born 1954/1955) is a Gaelic footballer with Ballybay Pearse Brothers and Monaghan. He was a goalkeeper for the teams and often a corner-back for Ballybay. For nearly two decades he was an inter-county player. He is a nephew of the late Cavan player Jack Smallhorny. Career Early career He served his apprenticeship with Paul McCarthy, the Ballybay, Monaghan and Railway Cup Ulster player. When McCarthy moved into the forward line for Ballybay's replayed 1975 county champions final against Castleblayney Faughs, the position of goalkeeper became available and Linden took the opportunity. Ballybay won a county Division One League title in 1978, with Linden in nets, but he had to wait eight years for another. The Sigerson Cup is the trophy for the premier Gaelic football championship among Higher Education institutions (Universities, Colleges and Institutes of Technology) in Ireland. It traditionally begins in mid January and ends in late February. The Monaghan Senior Hurling Championship is an annual hurling competition contested by top-tier Monaghan GAA clubs. Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands).
