Balla Sidibé
Balla Sidibé (1942 – July 29, 2020) was a Senegalese singer, bandleader, percussionist, vocalist and composer. A founding member of the popular vocal group Orchestra Baobab, Sidibé was responsible for composing many of the band's best known standards and is regarded by many, as the giant of African music. Biography Sidibé was born in the Casamance, Senegal in 1942. He abandoned an earlier career with the police force to become a musician and started performing around Dakar, the capital of Senegal in the mid-60s where he started his career. In 1970, Sidibé met with the other front men of The Orchestra Baobab at the Baobab Club in Dakar where they started as a house band. During his long career as a musician, he collaborated with Balla et ses Balladins, Youssou N'Dour, Bembeya Jazz National, Keletigui et ses Tambourinis, and Aurelio Martínez. Youssou N'Dour
Youssou N'Dour (, wo, Yuusu Nduur; also known as Youssou Madjiguène Ndour; born 1 October 1959) is a Senegalese singer, songwriter, musician, composer, occasional actor, businessman, and politician. In 2004, ''Rolling Stone'' magazine described him as, "perhaps the most famous singer alive" in Senegal and much of Africa. From April 2012 to September 2013, he was Senegal's Minister of Tourism. ''Specialist in All Styles'' is an album by the Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab, released in 2002. After the success of the ''Pirates Choice'' reissue, the band decided to record a reunion album. It was Orchestra Baobab's first album in 15 years. The album title was taken from a sign hanging outside a barbershop. The band supported the album with a world tour. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award, in the "Best Contemporary World Music Album" category. Production Recorded over 10 days in London, ''Specialist in All Styles'' was produced by Nick Gold and Youssou N'Dour; ironically, N'Dour's rise in popularity in the 1980s led in part to Orchestra Baobab's disbandment. Among the returning members were singers Balla Sidibe and Rudy Gomis, guitarist Barthelemy Atisso, and saxophonist Issa Cissoko. Aurelio Martínez, professionally known as Aurelio, is a Honduran musician and politician. He is a singer, percussionist, and guitarist known for his Garifuna music and is considered a Cultural Ambassador of the Garifuna people. According to the Guardian, he became the leading Garifuna performer after the death of musician Andy Palacio. From 2006 to 2010, Martinez served as a congressman for the National Congress of Honduras, becoming its first black member. Bembeya Jazz National (originally known as Orchestre de Beyla) is a Guinean jazz group that gained fame in the 1960s for their Afropop rhythms. They are considered one of the most significant bands in Guinean music. Many of their recordings are based on traditional folk music in the country and have been fused with jazz and Afropop style. Balla et ses Balladins (also known as Orchestre du Jardin de Guinée) was a dance-music orchestra formed in Conakry, Guinea in 1962 following the break-up of the Syli Orchestre National, Guinea's first state-sponsored group. Also called the Orchestre du Jardin de Guinée, after the "bar dancing" music venue in Conakry that still exists today, the group made a number of recordings for the state-owned Syliphone label and become one of the first modern dance musical groups in Guinea to use traditional musical instruments and fuse together traditional Guinean folk music with more modern influences. Background The newly independent state of Guinea established a number of music groups, competitions and festivals throughout the country to play the traditional musics of Guinea rather than the European styles that were popular in the colonial period.
