The species has long been overlooked because of confusion with ''Balea perversa''. Taxonomy The specific name ''sarsii'' is in honour of Norwegian biologist Michael Sars. According to Welter-Schultes ''Balea heydeni'' is conspecific with ''Balea sarsii''.
