Aleksandar Teodorov-Balan
Aleksandar Stoyanov Teodorov-Balan ( bg, Александър Стоянов Теодоров-Балан; 27 October 1859 – 12 February 1959) was a Bulgarian linguist, historian and bibliographer. Balan was born in the village of Kubey in the Russian Empire, today in Odessa Oblast, Ukraine, to a Bessarabian Bulgarian family. The Bulgarian general Georgi Todorov was his brother. Balan studied in Prague and Leipzig graduating in Slavistics from the Charles University in Prague. In 1884 he settled in Sofia, the capital of the Principality of Bulgaria, spending four years working for the Ministry of Popular Enlightenment. He became professor of Slavic ethnography and dialectology and history of the Bulgarian language, since 1893 head of the Bulgarian and Slavic literature department of the High Pedagogical School (the future Sofia University). Aparna Balan (born 9 August 1986) is an Indian badminton player from Kozhikode, Kerala. She was part of the national team that won the silver medal in 2010 Commonwealth Games, also gold medals in 2004, 2006 and 2010 South Asian Games. She is 6 times National Champion in mixed doubles and 3 times National Champion in women's doubles. She represented India in many international badminton tournaments. Pietro Balan (September 3, 1840 – 1893) was an Italian Catholic journalist and historian. He used newly opened Vatican archive material to write about the Reformation. Life He was born at Este, Veneto on 3 September 1840, and was educated in the seminary at Padua, where he was appointed professor in 1862. He was director of the Venetian journal ''La Libertà Cattolica'' in 1865, and of the Modena journal ''Diritto Cattolico'' in 1867. In 1879 he became subarchivist of the Vatican, but retired (or was dismissed) on a pretext of poor health four years later, moving to Pragatto in the province of Bologna. Vidya Balan (pronounced ; born 1 January 1979) is an Indian actress. Known for pioneering a change in the portrayal of women in Hindi cinema with her roles in female-led films, she is the recipient of several awards, including a National Film Award and seven Filmfare Awards. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2014. Vidya aspired to a career in film from a young age and had her first acting role in the 1995 sitcom '' Hum Paanch''. Bogdan Bălan (born 11 February 1980 in Brăila) is a Romanian former rugby union footballer who played as prop. Balan began his rugby career playing for Brăila in his home town. He then played for Timişoara, U Cluj and Bucharest Wolves. After that he moved to France and played for Bègles Bordeaux who were in Fédérale 1 at the time. He helped them get promoted to the Pro D2, and then joined US Montauban in 2005. Montauban was promoted from the Pro D2 to France's premier competition the Top 14 following Balan's first season with them. He also played for Lyon, helping them win two Rugby Pro D2 titles. Bălan was first selected for Romania in 2003 when he played against Georgia on 30 March that year. He has participated in the European Nations Cup, and in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Dan Mihai Bălan (born 6 February 1979) is a Moldovan artist, songwriter, and record producer. He is the founder of Moldovan eurodance band O-Zone, and wrote their international hit single "Dragostea Din Tei", which topped the charts in 32 countries and sold 12 million copies worldwide. Eugen Bălan (October 21, 1904 – April 4, 1968) was a Romanian prose writer. Born in Focșani, his father was a career army officer who died in the Battle of Turtucaia. He attended the Military High School in Craiova and the Polytechnic School, working as an engineer until the end of his life. His disjointed literary activity comprised two distinct phases. The first involved his 1941 debut novel, ''Într-o duminecă de august'', which won the Romanian Writers' Society prize and was issued in a second edition a quarter-century later. This book surprised critics with its maturity, sure phrasing and simple structure, as well as through it is the sudden nature of its publication, without prior indication of the author's talent. Bălan resumed writing after his retirement in 1965, composing sketches and short stories. Grigore Bălan
Grigore Bălan (July 14, 1896–September 13, 1944) was a Romanian brigadier general during World War II. Bălan was born in Felsőbalázsfalva, a village in Beszterce-Naszód County, Kingdom of Hungary, now Blăjenii de Sus, Bistrița-Năsăud County, Romania. He attended the Infantry School for Officers in Bucharest, graduating as second lieutenant in 1915. He fought in World War I, advancing to the rank of lieutenant by 1918. During the interwar period, he was promoted to captain (1921), major (1929), lieutenant-colonel (1936), and colonel (1940). He served as commanding officer of the 5th Mountain Group from September 1940 to February 1943. Ioan Bălan
Ioan Bălan (11 February 1880 – 4 August 1959) was a Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church. Biography He was born in Teiuș, Alba County, the son of Ștefan Bălan and Ana, née Muntean. After graduating high school in Blaj, he studied theology in Budapest, and was ordained a priest in 1903. He continued his studies in Vienna, moved to Blaj and then in 1909 to Bucharest, where a Greek-Catholic confessor was needed. In 1919 he returned to Blaj, becoming canon and in 1921 rector of the theological academy. In 1936, after Alexandru Nicolescu became Metropolitan of Făgăraș and Alba Iulia, he was consecrated Bishop of Lugoj. In 1948, the new Communist regime outlawed his church and he was arrested in October after refusing to convert to Romanian Orthodoxy. Lucian Bălan (25 June 1959 – 12 November 2015) was a Romanian football player and coach, winner of the European Cup and the European Supercup in 1986 and the European Supercup, both with Steaua București and former coach at a football school in Baia Mare. Career Lucian Bălan played one friendly game at international level for Romania, making his appearance on 8 April 1987 when coach Emerich Jenei sent him on the field at half-time to replace Gavril Balint in a 3–2 home victory against Israel.
