Balad, Somalia
Bal'ad District ( so, Degmada Balcad, italic=yes) is one of the districts of Middle Shabelle region of Somalia. It is located about 36 kilometers northeast of the capital city of Mogadishu. Terrorism In December 2021, Balad town was attacked by Al Shabaab fighters. About eight people were killed in the fighting. On 9 June, 2022, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for a landmine explosion targeted at the Danab Brigade early in the morning on the outskirts of the town, which they claim killed at least 15 soldiers and destroyed one vehicle. Somalia is officially divided into 18 administrative regions (''gobollo'', singular ''gobol'') . Middle Shabelle
Middle Shabelle ( so, Shabeellaha Dhexe, ar, شبيلي الوسطى, it, Medio Scebeli) is an administrative region ('' gobol'') in southern Somalia. Overview It is bordered by the Somali regions of Galguduud, Hiran, Lower Shabelle (Shabellaha Hoose), and Banaadir, as well as the Somali Sea. As part of the former Benadir region, Middle Shabelle's capital was Mogadishu up until the mid-1980s, when the town of Jowhar became the capital. It is named after the Shebelle River that passes through this region. Middle Shabelle is principally inhabited by Abgaal. There are also members of the non-Somali ethnic minority Bantu group (Shidle). The region supports livestock production, rain-fed and gravity irrigated agriculture and fisheries, with an annual rainfall between 150 and 500 millimeters covering an area of approximately 60,000 square kilometers. Danab Brigade
The Danab Brigade (Somali language, Somali: Ciidamada Danab, "''Lightning Force"'') is a highly trained Somali National Army commando force. Its strikes have repeatedly raided land in quick succession previously held by Somali Al-Qaeda linked insurgents Al-Shabaab (militant group), Al-Shabaab. History In February 2014, U.S. contractors concluded a six-month training course for the first Commandos since 1991. Training had been carried out by Bancroft Global Development, a U.S. private military contractor, paid by AMISOM which is then reimbursed by the U.S. State Department. The Somali Civil War (2009–present) is a phase of the Somali Civil War which is concentrated in southern and central Somalia. It began in late January 2009 with the conflict mainly between the forces of the Federal Government of Somalia assisted by African Union peacekeeping troops and Al-Qaeda aligned Al-Shabaab militants.
