Bailey Island Library Hall
Bailey Island Library Hall (locally just Library Hall) is a historic community building at 2167 Harpswell Island Road, on Bailey Island in Harpswell, Maine. Built in 1911–12, it has been a center of community life on the island since its construction, and is a notable architectural work of the New York City architectural firm Mann & MacNeille. Originally built to house a lending library and social hall, it now only serves the latter function. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 2008. Description and history Library Hall is located roughly in the center of Bailey Island, on the east side of Harpswell Island Road (Maine State Route 24). It is a -story wood-frame structure, with a side-gable roof, clapboard siding, and a fieldstone foundation. Harpswell, Maine
Harpswell is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, within Casco Bay in the Gulf of Maine. The population was 5,031 at the 2020 census. Harpswell is composed of land contiguous with the rest of Cumberland County, called Harpswell Neck, as well as three large islands connected by bridges: Sebascodegan Island (locally known as Great Island), Orr's Island, and Bailey Island and over 200 smaller islands. Harpswell is part of the Portland– South Portland–Biddeford, Maine Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The Native Americans who originally inhabited Harpswell were part of the Abenaki. Bailey Island (Maine)
Bailey Island is an island in Casco Bay, and a part of the town of Harpswell, Maine, Harpswell, in Cumberland County, Maine, Cumberland County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the island had a year-round population of 400. History Bailey Island originally bore the name Newaggin, given to it by the local Abenaki Native Americans, and was first populated by European settlers in the 17th century. The first settler of the island was William Black, son of Black Will who was a freed slave from Kittery, Maine. William sold the land his father had left him in the Upper Parish of Kittery and settled permanently on Bailey's Island. Because of this, the island became known as Will's Island. The story goes that in 1742, Reverend Timothy Bailey may have bought Will's Island for one pound of tobacco and a gallon of rum from William Black. Maine State Route 24
State Route 24 (abbreviated SR 24) is part of Maine's system of numbered state highways, running from Bailey Island south of Orr's Island in Harpswell northward to Gardiner, passing through Brunswick along the way. Route description SR 24 begins at an intersection with Abner Point Road on Bailey Island in the town of Harpswell. It formerly began at the southern tip of the island, where the road dead-ends. It proceeds northward through the "downtown" area of Harpswell on Orr's Island and continues onto mainland Maine where it crosses into the town of Brunswick. SR 24 used to traverse downtown Brunswick, but now bypasses the downtown area. The Bailey Island Bridge (also called the Cribstone Bridge) is a historic bridge in Harpswell, Maine, the town of Harpswell within Cumberland County, Maine, Cumberland County in the United States, state of Maine.
