Bailey-Salgado Project
The Bailey-Salgado Project (often abbreviated to BSP) is an audiovisual ensemble formed in 2010 by musician and composer Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins/Babble, International Observer) and astronomer and visual artist José Francisco Salgado. They combine music with photography, video, and motion graphics to create multimedia works that have as subject the physical world. Their first work together, a short film entitled ''Sidereal Motion'', was previewed in Bath, England in October 2010. History Formation In early 2010, José Francisco Salgado, an astronomer and science visualizer at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, edited nighttime footage he had taken at the Paranal Observatory to the track Spirit by Babble, an electronic band led by Tom Bailey after the Thompson Twins disbanded. Ambient music is a genre of music that emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure or rhythm. Thompson Twins
Thompson Twins were a British Pop music, pop band formed in 1977 in Sheffield. Initially a New wave music, new wave group, they switched to a more mainstream pop sound and achieved considerable popularity during the mid-1980s, scoring a string of hits in the United Kingdom, the United States, and around the world. In 1993, they changed their name to Babble (band), Babble, to reflect their change in music from pop to Dub music, dub-influenced Chill-out music, chill-out. They continued as Babble until 1996, at which point the group permanently broke up. International Observer
International Observer is a British-New Zealand musical duo formed by Tom Bailey, musician and ex-lead singer of the British band the Thompson Twins, which rose to fame during the 1980s. Its debut album, ''Seen'', featured Māori visual artist Rakai Karaitiana as part of the project. Career Following from the ashes of both the Thompson Twins and subsequent group Babble, Bailey had taken to producing the New Zealand band Stellar* while still residing in the country (Bailey would subsequently move back to Europe in 2005). The success of this collaboration allowed him to focus on his own music, which had moved into the world of dub music, or chill music, as it is sometimes referred to in New Zealand. Tom Bailey (musician)
Thomas Alexander Bailey (born 18 January 1956) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, composer and record producer. Bailey came to prominence in the early 1980s as the lead vocalist for the new wave band Thompson Twins, which released five singles that entered the top ten charts in the United Kingdom during the 1980s: " Love On Your Side", " We Are Detective", " Hold Me Now", "Doctor! Doctor!", and "You Take Me Up". He was the only member of the band to have formal musical training. From 1994, Bailey was also a member of its later incarnation, Babble, releasing two commercially unsuccessful studio albums. He released his debut solo studio album ''Science Fiction'' in 2018. José Francisco Salgado (born José Francisco Salgado Alicea in San Juan, Puerto Rico) is an astronomer, experimental photographer, visual artist, and public speaker. He is known to use art to communicate science in engaging ways. Salgado's ''Science & Symphony'' films have been presented in more than 200 concerts and 150 lectures reaching a combined audience of more than 400,000 people in 18 countries. Paranal Observatory
Paranal Observatory is an astronomical observatory operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO). It is located in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile on Cerro Paranal at altitude, south of Antofagasta. By total light-collecting area, it is the largest optical-infrared observatory in the Southern Hemisphere; worldwide, it is second to the Mauna Kea Observatory on Hawaii. The Stone (Babble Album)
''The Stone'' is the debut studio album by Babble, an electronic dance music group that was composed of Tom Bailey, Alannah Currie (formerly of the Thompson Twins), and Keith Fernley. The group changed its name as it changed the outward appearance of its sound, from pop to dub-influenced chill-out. The underlying melodies and the familiar voices of Bailey and Currie still gave a Thompson Twins tone. However, the addition of Quest vocalist Amey St. Cyr (" Take Me Away" and "Tribe"), emcee Q-Tee ("Beautiful"), deep basslines, and loads of spacious effects made it a much more relevant album for the lounge music scene. Promotion of the album was minimal.
