Bagworth Colliery, 1990
Bagworth is a village and former civil parish, now in the parish of Bagworth and Thornton, in the Hinckley and Bosworth district, in Leicestershire, England, west of Leicester. In 1931 the parish had a population of 1568. History The village's name means 'the enclosure of Baecga'. There are records of the manor of Bagworth from the early 14th and early 15th centuries, when it was held by the same feudal lords as the neighbouring manor of Thornton. Bagworth Park is first recorded in 1279 under ownership of the Bishop of Durham. In 1318 Roger de Holland was given permission to fortify his property at Bagworth.Leicestershire Museums Archaeological fieldwork Group 2008, Monograph No 2, p.3 It is recorded under the ownership of Matilda Lovell in 1411. Bagworth And Ellistown Railway Station
Bagworth and Ellistown was a railway station on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line, that served the villages of Bagworth and Ellistown in Leicestershire. It was opened by the Midland Railway in 1849 and closed by British Railways in 1964. It was at Bagworth on what is now the B585 road. History The Leicester and Swannington Railway had previously opened a Bagworth station in 1832. The Midland Railway took over the line in 1845 and made a number of improvements, including replacing the original Bagworth station with a new one on 1 August 1849. The Ellis family created the colliery and village of Ellistown in 1873 and the Midland renamed the station Bagworth and Ellistown on 1 October 1894. Staffordshire Blue Brick
Staffordshire blue brick is a strong type of construction brick, originally made in Staffordshire, England. The brick is made from the local red clay, Etruria marl, which when fired at a high temperature in a low-oxygen reducing atmosphere takes on a deep blue colour and attains a very hard surface with high crushing strength and low water absorption. Brickworks were a key industry across the whole Black Country throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, and were considered so important that they were designated as a reserved occupation during World War Two. The Black Country was a major producer of clay for brickmaking, often mined from beneath the 30 foot Staffordshire coal seam. The industry dates back to at least the 17th century, however brickworks really took off in the 19th century. A buttress is an architectural structure built against or projecting from a wall which serves to support or reinforce the wall. Buttresses are fairly common on more ancient buildings, as a means of providing support to act against the lateral (sideways) forces arising out of inadequately braced roof structures. Anglo-Saxon architecture was a period in the history of architecture in England from the mid-5th century until the Norman Conquest of 1066. Anglo-Saxon secular buildings in Britain were generally simple, constructed mainly using timber with thatch for roofing. No universally accepted example survives above ground. Generally preferring not to settle within the old Roman cities, the Anglo-Saxons built small towns near their centres of agriculture, at fords in rivers or sited to serve as ports. A chapel of ease (or chapel-of-ease) is a church architecture, church building other than the parish church, built within the bounds of a parish for the attendance of those who cannot reach the parish church conveniently. Chapel Of The Holy Rood, Bagworth
The Chapel of the Holy Rood was a Church of England chapel in Bagworth, Leicestershire. It closed in 2013 to worship and was demolished in 2019. Now, a war memorial garden occupies the site of the church with the graveyard and some remnants of the church still visible. The congregation and church now meets at the nearby Bagworth Community Centre. History The chapel was a dependent chapelry of St Peter's Church, Thornton. It was described, in 1848, as having walls dating from 1637 and having a Saxon door. The entire church, except the tower, was rebuilt in 1873. The church was demolished in 1968. The new chapel was square and consisted of a raised altar, nave, lobby, two aisles and a separate tower, which contained two bells. Some remains of the earlier Norman church could be seen in the walls. The font survived from the earlier building. The site was demolished in 2019 after being left unused since 2013.
