Badminton At The 1972 Summer Olympics
Badminton was one of two demonstration sports at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. It was the first time that the sport was part of the Olympic program, and it would become an official Olympic sport 20 years later at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Ng Boon Bee
Dato' Ng Boon Bee (; 17 December 1937 – 3 August 2022) was a Malaysian badminton player who excelled from the 1960s through the early 1970s. His success in doubles earned him recognition as one of greatest doubles players in badminton history. Early life Boon Bee started to play badminton when he was ten years inspired by his badminton-playing father. His first success in badminton came in 1955 when he became Perak schoolboy champ in the singles and doubles. A year later, he won the Perak junior. He also excelled in all types of sports beside badminton such as athletics, tennis, rugby, and playing association football at the national level. It was some time in 1961 that he finally decided to concentrate on badminton. Bandid Jaiyen is a former badminton player who won numerous Thai national titles and also excelled internationally between the late 1960s and the early 1980s. Suresh Goel
Suresh Goel (20 June 1943 – 13 April 1978) was Indian national badminton champion and a recipient of Arjuna award. Goel was born in Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh in 1943. He started playing badminton at young age of 10 and at the age of 14 was national junior champion. He was the men's national singles champion on five occasions from 1962 to 1970 and also won national titles in men's doubles and mixed doubles. He was honoured with Arjuna award in 1967. He represented India in Thomas Cup in 1960-61 and captained the Indian team against Indonesia at Jaipur in 1969-70. He also played in U.S. Open Badminton Championships in 1967 and reached the final where he lost to Erland Kops of Denmark. He played at the prestigious All England Championship many times. Jamie Paulson
Jamie Paulson (born April 26, 1948) is a Canadian former badminton player who won national and international titles from the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. In 1970 he won the men's singles at the quadrennial 1970 British Commonwealth Games making him the only Canadian to do so. He was the flag bearer for Canada at the 1974 British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch where he finished second to Malaysia's Punch Gunalan. The 1904 Summer Olympics (officially the Games of the III Olympiad and also known as St. Louis 1904) were an international multi-sport event held in St. Louis, Missouri, United States, from 29 August to 3 September 1904, as part of an extended sports program lasting from 1 July to 23 November 1904, located at what is now known as Francis Field on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis. Ulla Strand
Ulla Strand (21 March 1943 - 7 August 2007) (born as Ulla Rasmussen) was badminton player of Denmark who excelled from the early 1960s to the early 1970s. Though she won three Danish national singles titles and reached the women's singles final at the All-England Championships in 1965, most of her major championship victories were in doubles (often with her sister Karin Jorgensen) and mixed doubles. Attractive and charismatic, she was a crowd favorite throughout her career. She was included in the Badminton Hall of Fame in 1999. Ulla Strand died in 2007 after a long illness. Roland Maywald (born 1948) is a former German badminton player who won numerous (West) German national and other European titles from the late 1960s to the mid-1980s. Career Though he won the German national singles title in 1974, Maywald was primarily a doubles specialist.
