Bacuag, officially the Municipality of Bacuag ( Surigaonon: Lungsod nan Bacuag; tl, Bayan ng Bacuag), is a 5th class municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 14,881 people. Geography The town of Bacuag is situated along the north-eastern coast of Mindanao, along the eastern part of the province of Surigao del Norte. It is bounded on the north-western portion by the town of Placer and on the north-eastern portion by Hinatuan Passage. On the south-western side, it is bounded by the town of Gigaquit. On the western side, it is bounded by the town of Tubod and Alegria. Bacuag is from the provincial capital Surigao City. Gigaquit, officially the Municipality of Gigaquit (Surigaonon language, Surigaonon: Lungsod nan Gigaquit; tl, Bayan ng Gigaquit), is a 4th class municipality of the Philippines, municipality in the Philippine Province, province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 21,849 people. The name is derived from the words ''gigad'' (meaning "shore") and ''gakit'' (meaning "bamboo raft") and refers to the means of transportation that the early settlers used to travel from the inland to the shore. History Gigaquit was established in 1850 by Cero, a native who fortified the place to make it safe from Moro people, Moro raiders. Tubod, officially the Municipality of Tubod ( Surigaonon: Lungsod nan Tubod; tl, Bayan ng Tubod), is a 5th class municipality in the province of Surigao del Norte, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 15,043 people. History Tubod was a virgin forest where native inhabitants, the Mamanwa Tribe, had been living. Nomadic in nature, the tribe traveled from the hinterland of Tubod and stayed near riverbanks. Surigaonon Language
Surigaonon is an Austronesian language spoken by Surigaonon people. As a regional Philippine language, it is spoken in the province of Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Sur, and some portions of Agusan del Norte, especially the towns near the Mainit Lake, Agusan del Sur and Davao Oriental. External relationships Surigaonon is a member of the Bisayan languages. It has been heavily influenced by Cebuano due to the influx of many Cebuanos in the region. However, most Cebuano speakers can hardly understand Surigaonon speakers, except for Cebuanos who have been living in the region for years.
