Back That Fact
''Back That Fact'' is an American game show that aired on ABC from October 22 to November 26, 1953. This was the first TV game show for creator/producers Jack Barry and Dan Enright. Borscht Belt comedian and syndicated columnist Joey Adams was the emcee, with actress Hope Lange and actor Al Kelly as his assistants and Carl Caruso as the announcer. ''Back That Fact'' was broadcast from New York City. Game play At the beginning of the show, a panel of judges was chosen from members of the studio audience. Then the emcee would interview another member of the audience about that person's life, family, job, hobbies and other parts of their background. If at any time during the interview the contestant made a positive assertion on an answer, the announcer would interrupt and ask the player to "Back That Fact". Jack Barry (television Personality)
Jack Barry (born Jack Barasch; March 20, 1918 – May 2, 1984) was an American game show host, television personality and executive who made a name for himself in the game show field. Barry served as host of several game shows in his career, many of which he developed along with Dan Enright as part of their joint operation Barry & Enright Productions. Barry's reputation became tarnished due to his involvement in the 1950s quiz show scandals and the ensuing fallout affected his career for over a decade. Early life and career Barry was born and raised in Lindenhurst, New York, on Long Island. His family was Jewish. He graduated from Lindenhurst Senior High School and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School, in Philadelphia. Kinescope
Kinescope , shortened to kine , also known as telerecording in Britain, is a recording of a television program on motion picture film, directly through a lens focused on the screen of a video monitor. The process was pioneered during the 1940s for the preservation, re-broadcasting and sale of television programmes before the introduction of quadruplex videotape, which from 1956 eventually superseded the use of kinescopes for all of these purposes. Kinescopes were the only practical way to preserve live television broadcasts prior to videotape. Typically, the term Kinescope can refer to the process itself, the equipment used for the procedure (a movie camera mounted in front of a video monitor, and synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate), or a film made using the process. Borscht Belt
The Borscht Belt, or Jewish Alps, is a colloquial term for the mostly defunct summer resorts of the Catskill Mountains in parts of Sullivan, Orange, and Ulster counties in the U.S. state of New York, straddling both Upstate New York and the northern edges of the New York metropolitan area. A source interviewed by ''Time'' magazine stated that the visits to the area by Jewish families was already underway "as early as the 1890s ... Tannersville ... was 'a great resort of our Israelite brethren'...from the 1920s on here werehundreds of hotels". A 2019 review of the history is more specific: "in its heyday, as many as 500 resorts catered to guests of various incomes". Dan Enright
Daniel Enright (né Ehrenreich; August 30, 1917 – May 22, 1992) was an American television producer, primarily of game shows. Enright worked with Jack Barry from the 1940s until Barry's death in 1984. They were partners in creating programs for radio and television. Their company was called Barry & Enright Productions. Enright (original surname Ehrenreich), who grew up in British Palestine and New York City, met up with Barry as the latter was working in stand-up comedy. After a stint at WOR radio, the two developed several early TV shows, including the seminal "interactive" show ''Winky Dink and You'', as well as ''Juvenile Jury'' and ''Life Begins at Eighty'', and ''Wisdom of the Ages''.
