Critical reception At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from critics, the album received an average score of 70, based on 9 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Bram E. Gieben of '' The Skinny'' gave the album 4 out of 5 stars, calling it "a perfect, psychedelic hybrid of dusty LA beat-scene boom-bap and the cosmic jazz excursions of the Sun Ra Arkestra." Daryl Keating of ''Exclaim!'' said: "Paradoxically fusing ancient, grinding rhythms and ultra-modern, plush beats, ''Back on the Planet'' skips between two distant eras while actively laughing at everything in the middle." Ras G
Gregory Shorter Jr. (December 11, 1978 – July 29, 2019), better known by his stage name Ras G, was an American record producer and DJ from Los Angeles, California. He was a co-founder of the record label Poo-Bah Records and was also associated with Brainfeeder. He released 24 albums and mixtapes since his debut in 2008. Life and career Ras G started his career in 2005. He released ''Brotha from Anotha Planet'' in 2009. His solo album, ''Down 2 Earth'', was released on Ramp Recordings in 2011. He released a free EP, titled ''Ainat'', in 2012. In 2013, he released '' Back on the Planet'' on Brainfeeder. He died in the Leimert Park neighborhood of Los Angeles on July 29, 2019, aged 40. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. It has since expanded and covers all kinds of music, including pop. Pitchfork was sold to Condé Nast in 2015, although Schreiber remained its editor-in-chief until he left the website in 2019. Initially based in Minneapolis, Pitchfork later moved to Chicago, and then Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Its offices are currently located in One World Trade Center alongside other Condé Nast publications. __NOTOC__ Wolf Eyes is an American experimental music group from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1996 by Nate Young. Currently a duo, Wolf Eyes are a prominent act within contemporary noise music. They have collaborated with a variety of artists from different countries and art forms. History Wolf Eyes began as a solo project of Nate Young. Aaron Dilloway joined in 1998 while also playing with John Olson in Universal Indians. Olson occasionally performed with Wolf Eyes under the moniker Spykes and joined Wolf Eyes in 2000 after Universal Indians disbanded. In 2005, Dilloway left Wolf Eyes, uninterested in extensive touring. Sun Ra Arkestra
The Sun Ra Arkestra is an American jazz group formed in the mid-1950s and led by keyboardist/composer Sun Ra until his death in 1993. The group is considered a pioneer of afrofuturism. As of 2022, the Arkestra is led by saxophonist Marshall Allen, an Arkestra member since 1958, who is supported by more than a dozen other musicians. History The band is headquartered in a rowhouse in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood. Saxophonist and current leader Marshall Allen has lived and worked in the house since 1968. In 1976, Vincent Chancey, an American jazz hornist joined the group. In 1993, Allen became the leader of Arkestra after Sun Ra died. In 1999, the Arkestra released the studio album, ''A Song for the Sun.'' In 2009, Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art hosted an exhibition of the group's history and artistry.
