Bach Festival
A Bach festival is a music festival held to celebrate the memory of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750). Various locations throughout the world hold festivals dedicated to Bach. A notable example is the Bachfest Leipzig, held each year in the city of Leipzig, where the composer worked as Thomaskantor for the last 27 years of his life. Historical festivals Baldwin Wallace Bach Festival The Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music at Baldwin Wallace University is home to the BW Bach Festival, the oldest collegiate Bach festival in the nation. Bach Music Festival Of Canada
The Bach Music Festival of Canada or Festival Bach is an international music festival in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach that takes place in the heart of Southern Ontario and is held on a biennial basis. The festival features regional, national and international musicians interpreting the works of Bach. History The inaugural event took place in 2011. The festival was initially referred to as the Bach Festival of South Huron but was changed in 2013. Choral conductor Gerald Fagan has been the artistic director of the festival from its inception. The increase in the number of music festivals specializing in early music is a reflection of the early music revival of the 1970s and 1980s. The WQXR All-Day Bach Organ Marathon
The WQXR All-Day Bach Organ Marathon was a marathon performance of the nearly complete organ works of Johann Sebastian Bach, hosted by WQXR-FM. The series of recitals was held at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Manhattan from 7:00 A.M. on November 22, 2014, to 1:00 A.M the next day. The organ was built in 1978 by Klais Orgelbau. Grammy-winning Juilliard professor and department chair, Paul Jacobs, curated the event. The works were divided among Jacobs, eighteen of his Juilliard students (including alumni), and Juilliard faculty member (and alumnus) David Enlow. Fourteen recitals consisted of over 150 preludes (fantasias, toccatas), fugues, chorales, concerti, and other forms. Tilford Bach Festival
The Tilford Bach Festival is a Festival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach held annually at All Saints Church Tilford, near Farnham, Surrey. History The Tilford Bach Festival was first held in 1952, following the creation of the Tilford Bach Society the same year. The Society and Festival were founded by Denys Darlow (1921-2015). For the first two decades, performances at the Festival drew heavily on local musicians, amateurs as well as teachers and professionals; from the 1970s onwards, however, 'historically informed performance' came to dominate more and more, and amateur involvement gradually died out. Denys Darlow retired as Director following the 50th Festival in 2002; the current Music Director is the violinist Adrian Butterfield. The Thüringer Bachwochen (Thuringia Bach weeks) is a Baroque music festival in honor of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is the largest classical music festival in Thuringia, Germany. The artistic director since 2004 has been the Erfurt Cathedral organist Silvius von Kessel. History In 1992, the Thuringian Bach Festival was held for the first time. After being abandoned, it was revived in 2005. Michael Kennedy (music Critic)
George Michael Sinclair Kennedy CBE (19 February 1926 – 31 December 2014) was an English music critic and author who specialized in classical music. For nearly two decades he was the chief classical music critic for both ''The Daily Telegraph'' (1986–2005) and ''The Sunday Telegraph'' (1989–2005). A prolific writer, he was the biographer of many composers and musicians, including Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Barbirolli, Mahler, Strauss, Britten, Boult and Walton.
