BC Golden Gloves
The Golden Gloves in British Columbia, Canada has been a key amateur boxing tournament since its inception in 1939. The debut Golden Gloves champions in 1939 were Wayne Morris, Alan Dunn, Phil Vickery, Erick Burnell, Bob Hickey, Henry Devine and Kenny Lindsay. The first Golden Boy was Phil Vickery. The Sun Golden Gloves Following promotion of amateur boxing in 1938, the executive of the BC Amateur Boxing Association believed it was time to start a Golden Gloves tournament. The ''Vancouver Sun'' newspaper accepted the sponsorship for the province of British Columbia. The first tournament took place in 1939. Amateur Boxing
Amateur boxing is a variant of boxing practiced at the collegiate level, at the Olympic Games, Pan American Games and Commonwealth Games, as well as many associations. Amateur boxing bouts are short in duration, comprising three rounds of three minutes in men, and four rounds of two minutes in women, each with a one-minute interval between rounds. Men's senior bouts changed in format from four two-minute rounds to three three-minute rounds on January 1, 2009. This type of competition prizes point-scoring blows, based on number of clean punches landed, rather than physical power. Also, this short format allows tournaments to feature several bouts over several days, unlike professional boxing, where fighters rest several months between bouts. A referee monitors the fight to ensure that competitors use only legal blows (a belt worn over the torso represents the lower limit of punches – any boxer repeatedly landing "low blows" is disqualified). Eddie Haddad
Eddie Haddad (February 20, 1928 in Winnipeg, Manitoba – August 14, 1978 in Chilliwack, British Columbia) was a boxer primarily active in the 1940s in Manitoba and British Columbia. His first major international tournament was at the 1948 Olympic Games as a lightweight boxer where he lost in the quarterfinals to the eventual gold medalist, Joseph Vissers of Belgium. Haddad was also a Canadian team member of the 1950 British Empire Games (now called the Commonwealth Games). Freddy Stephen Fuller
Freddy Fuller is an ex-amateur boxer from British Columbia, Canada. He was a member of the 1967 Pan American Games, 1967 Canadian Pan Am Games boxing team, a several times Canadian Amateur Boxing Champion in the 1960s and 1970, and a member of the Canadian boxing team for the 1970 Commonwealth Games. Fighting career Fuller began his boxing journey in the 1950s at the Burnaby Boxing Club under coach Harry Twist, then joined the East Vancouver Optimist Club. In his junior years Fuller was twice named Emerald Boy and in 1963, he earned the BC Jr. Golden Boy award. As a junior boxer Fuller won the 1963 Jr Golden Boy Award and the 1965 Golden Boy Award. Dick Findlay
Dick Findlay is a Canadian boxer who represented Canada in the 1968 Summer Olympic Games. Early career In 1966 and 1967, Findlay was the first boxer to earn back-to-back "Golden Boy" awards in the BC Golden Gloves. Chris Ius
Chris Ius (born January 14, 1954, in Vancouver, British Columbia) is a Canadian boxer, who represented his native country at two consecutive Summer Olympics, starting in 1972. In both tournaments he was eliminated in the third round. Boxing Club Chris was one of the many outstanding boxers that were part of the North West Eagles Boxing Club in North Vancouver. Dale Walters
Dale Walters (born September 27, 1963) is a retired Canadian boxer and former child actor. During his boxing career, he won a bantamweight bronze medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics. Acting career Walters appeared as a child actor in several Canadian television series in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He attended Burnaby Central Secondary school alongside Michael J. Frank Albert Scott
Frank Albert Scott (1949–2005) was a boxer and boxing coach. Career Scott won a bronze medal at the 1966 Commonwealth Games. He was a member of the Canadian boxing team in the 1966 and 1970 Commonwealth Games and the 1967 Pan American Games. During his active years, some of his bouts took place in Seattle, Washington, including an "All Star" boxing card that took place on March 23, 1968. Barney Ross (born Dov-Ber "Beryl" David Rosofsky; December 23, 1909 – January 17, 1967) was an American professional boxer. Ross became a world champion in three weight divisions and was a decorated veteran of World War II. The Golden Gloves is the name given to annual competitions for amateur boxing in the United States, where they are awarded a belt and a ring. And the title of nations champion is awarded.
