BBC New Comedy Award
The BBC New Comedy Award first took place in 1995, and it is considered to be one of the top UK comedy newcomer awards. It was axed in 2006, being replaced by a nationwide talent hunt that places its emphasis on sketch writing and filmed performance. However, in March 2011 thBBC Radio New Comedy Awardwas relaunched in conjunction with BBC Radio 2, and ran as a joint project between Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4 Extra. The current arrangement is for 4 Extra to broadcast the heats and semi-finals of the contest, whilst Radio 4 broadcasts the live final. The finals of this event have boasted many well known names that have continued to work in comedy to great acclaim - amongst the winners of the award are: Julian Barratt (1995), Marcus Brigstocke (1996), Paul Foot (1997), Josie Long (1999), Alan Carr (2001), Nina Conti (2002), Rhod Gilbert (2003), Angela Barnes (2011) and Lost Voice Guy (2014). BBC Radio 2
BBC Radio 2 is a British national radio station owned and operated by the BBC. It is the most popular station in the United Kingdom with over 15 million weekly listeners. Since launching in 1967, the station broadcasts a wide range of content. The Radio 2 about page says: "With a repertoire covering more than 40 years, Radio 2 plays the widest selection of music on the radio—from classic and mainstream pop to a specialist portfolio including classical, country, folk, jazz, soul, rock 'n' roll, gospel and blues." Radio 2 broadcasts throughout the UK on FM between and from studios in Wogan House, adjacent to Broadcasting House in central London. Shappi Khorsandi
Shaparak Khorsandi ( fa, شاپرک خرسندی, born 8 June 1973), formerly known as Shappi Khorsandi, is an Iranian-born British comedian and author. She is the daughter of the Iranian political satirist and poet Hadi Khorsandi. Her family left Iran for the United Kingdom following the Islamic Revolution. In January 2016, she became President of Humanists UK and Vice-President in 2019. Her second book and first novel, ''Nina is Not OK'', was published in 2016. Des McLean (comedian)
Des McLean is a Scottish stand-up comedian, actor, and a presenter for radio and television from Glasgow. Billy Connolly has cited McLean as his favourite comedian. Comedy McLean started working in comedy in 2000, and was a finalist in both the BBC New Comedy Awards and the Channel 4 programme '' So You Think You’re Funny?''. In 2002 McLean made his debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe with his one-man show ''Des McLean 5 Stars'' and appeared on the BBC series ''Live Floor Show''. Jeffrey Mirza (born 3 February 1964) is an English stand-up comedian and actor of British-Pakistani descent. Early life Mirza was born and brought up in East End of London, England to Pakistani parents. His family are from the Punjab region of Pakistan and are of Mughal descent.
