BAP Quiñones (FM-58)
''Sagittario'' (F 565) is the second ship of the s of the Italian Navy. She was sold to Peruvian Navy in the 2000s. ''Quiñones'' (FM-58) is one of eight ''Carvajal''-class frigates of the Peruvian Navy. It is named after José Quiñones Gonzales, a Peruvian pilot who was a hero of the Ecuadorian–Peruvian War who sacrificed himself to destroy an enemy position. Construction and career Italian service The ship initially built for the Italian Navy and was named ''Sagittario'' with a pennant of F 565. The ship was laid down on 4 February 1976, was launched on 22 June 1977 by the shipyard Riva Trigoso and commissioned in the Italian Navy on 18 November 1977. On 31 October 2005 ''Sagittario'' was decommissioned and transferred to the Navy of Peru. The diesel engine, named after Rudolf Diesel, is an internal combustion engine in which ignition of the fuel is caused by the elevated temperature of the air in the cylinder due to mechanical compression; thus, the diesel engine is a so-called compression-ignition engine (CI engine). The Sikorsky SH-3 Sea King (company designation S-61) is an American twin-engined anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter designed and built by Sikorsky Aircraft. Otobreda 127/54 Compact
The Otobreda 127mm/54 Compact (''127/54C'') gun is a dual purpose naval artillery piece built by the Italian company Oto Melara. It uses the 127mm round which is also used in the 5 inch/ 54 gun, albeit that this gun calibre is measured in United States customary units rather than metric. The gun uses an automatic loading system where 66 127mm rounds of various kinds can be stored ready-to-fire in three loader drums (each holding 22 rounds). The barrel is water-cooled. Selenia Aspide
Aspide (the Italian name for the asp) is an Italian medium range air-to-air and surface-to-air missile produced by Selenia (then by Alenia Aeronautica, now a part of Leonardo S.p.A.). It is provided with semi-active radar homing seeker. It is very similar to the American AIM-7 Sparrow, using the same airframe, but uses an inverse monopulse seeker that is far more accurate and much less susceptible to ECM than the original conical scanning version.
