B. R. Dionysius
B. R. Dionysius (born 1969) is an Australian poet, editor and educator. His poems have appeared in numerous national and international anthologies, journals, magazines, newspapers and other periodicals. He was born in Dalby, Queensland. He was founding Director of the ''Queensland Poetry Festival'' and Director of Fringe Arts Collective Inc. a not-for-profit literary collective that organised the ''Brisbane Writers Fringe Festival'' (1993-1996) the ''Queensland Poetry Festival'' (1997-2001), ''The Arts Queensland Award for Unpublished Poetry'' (now the '' Val Vallis Award for Unpublished Poetry'') published the poetry broadsheet, ''Seriously Fishy'' and coordinated literary events in Brisbane including ''Chalice Poets'', ''With Baited Breath'' and ''The Word Made Flesh''. Melissa Ashley (born 1973) is an Australian novelist. In the 2017 Queensland Literary Awards, her novel ''The Birdman's Wife'' won the University of Queensland Fiction Book Award. It also received the Australian Booksellers Association Nielsen BookData 2017 Booksellers Choice Award. Biography Ashley was born 1973 in Christchurch, New Zealand and arrived in Australia aged eight. Ashley has two children and is a self-confessed committed "twitcher". Ashley's interest in birds motivated her 2016 historical novel ''The Birdman's Wife'', about Elizabeth Gould who illustrated and drew specimens of birds for her husband John Gould's various books on birds. Ashley wrote the novel as part of her PhD whilst studying at the University of Queensland. ''The Bee and the Orange Tree'' was shortlisted for the 2020 Davitt Award for best debut crime book. A poet is a person who studies and creates poetry. Poets may describe themselves as such or be described as such by others. Dalby () is a rural town and locality in the Western Downs Region, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Dalby had a population of 12,719 people. It is on the Darling Downs and is the administrative centre for the Western Downs Region. Geography Dalby is approximately 82.3 kilometres (51 mi) west of Toowoomba, west northwest of the state capital, Brisbane, 269 kilometres (167 mi) east southeast of Roma and 535 kilometres (332 mi) east southeast of Charleville at the junction of the Warrego, Moonie and Bunya Highways. Queensland Poetry Festival is the flagship program of Queensland Poetry one of Australia's premier organisations for all things poetry. It exists to support and promote a poetry culture in Queensland and Australia, embracing the wide possibility of poetic expression in all of its forms. Val Vallis Award
The Val Vallis Award is an Australian poetry award named in honour of the Queensland poet Val Vallis (1916–2009). Val Vallis was a lyric poet who lectured in English and Philosophy at the University of Queensland. In 2002 the then Arts Minister, Matt Foley, announced "...the naming of a major poetry award, the first Arts Queensland Val Vallis Award for Unpublished Poetry to commemorate Val’s contribution to poetry in Queensland."
