Azubah Caroline Condit
Azubah Caroline Condit (c. 1810 – June 11, 1844) was a missionary of the Reformed Church in America. Condit embarked on missionary work in response to a call from David Abeel, and with Jacob Ennis, Elihu Doty, Elbert Nevius, and William Youngblood, along with their wives, she sailed to Borneo from New York City in June 1836; she was the sister of Elbert Nevius' wife. The first single woman to engage in foreign mission work for the Reformed Church in America, her title was "assistant missionary". She studied Chinese and engaged in the instruction of Chinese girls on Java; she also founded a boarding school at Pontianak dedicated to the education of Chinese girls. In Mumbai, Condit married a fellow missionary, the Reverend D. O. Allen, on December 12, 1843; she died the following year in the same city. References

David Abeel
David Abeel (June 12, 1804 – September 4, 1846) was a missionary of the Dutch Reformed Church with the American Reformed Mission. Biography Abeel was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey on June 12, 1804 to Captain David and Jane Hassert Abeel. He is a descendant of Albany, New York Mayor Johannes Abeel. After having begun his studies in medicine, Abeel converted and was ordained a minister. He graduated from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in 1827, and was ordained to the ministry that same year. He served as a pastor of his church until the winter 1828, when he went to St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda to recover his health. He was appointed the chaplain of the Seaman's Friend Society. In 1829, he left New York to serve as a missionary. He arrived in Canton, China in 1829, later evangelizing in Java, Malacca, Siam, and Singapore. Elihu Doty
Elihu Doty (20 September 1809 – 30 November 1864) was an American missionary to China. He was responsible for the first textbook of Southern Min in English. Along with John Van Nest Talmage he is credited with the invention of Pe̍h-ōe-jī, the most common orthography used to write Southern Min, although some doubt remains as to the exact origins of this system. Early mission Doty arrived in Batavia (now Jakarta) in the Dutch East Indies in 1836 and spent his first three years as a missionary there; Azubah Caroline Condit was among those who accompanied him on his journey there. Pontianak or Khuntien is the capital of the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan, founded first as a trading port on the island of Borneo, occupying an area of 118.31 km2 in the delta of the Kapuas River at a point where it is joined by its major tributary, the Landak River.
