Assaut de Saint-Pierre is a football and athletics club of Martinique, playing in the town of Saint-Pierre. Founded in 1942, the club's colours are blue and white. History Assaut de Saint-Pierre was founded in 1942. The club enjoyed its most successful period in the 1960s, and was one of the strongest teams in Martinique and the French West Indies during this time. Martinique Championnat National is the top association football league in Martinique. It was created in 1919 and is headed by the Ligue de Football de Martinique. 14 Teams participate in this league. Saint-Pierre (, ; ; Martinican Creole: ) is a town and commune of France's Caribbean overseas department of Martinique, founded in 1635 by Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc. Before the total destruction of Saint-Pierre by a volcanic eruption in 1902, it was the most important city of Martinique culturally and economically, being known as "the Paris of the Caribbean". While Fort-de-France was the official administrative capital, Saint-Pierre was the cultural capital of Martinique. After the disaster, Fort-de-France grew in economic importance.
