Augustus Jaspert
Augustus James Ulysses "Gus" Jaspert (born 1979) is a British diplomat who was previously the Governor of the Virgin Islands, Governor of the British Virgin Islands. He was sworn into office on 22 August 2017. He left office on 23 January 2021, and was succeeded by John Rankin (diplomat), John Rankin who was sworn in after completing a 14-day COVID-19 quarantine. Career and background From 2001 to 2007 Jaspert worked for Surrey County Council as Lead Manager for Children's Services. He then spent two years at HM Treasury as part of the Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, followed by three years at the Home Office as Head of Drugs and Alcohol and Head of Policing. From 2012 to 2014 he worked at 10 Downing Street as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister, David Cameron, after which he spent a year studying at the Royal College of Defence Studies, an institution which grooms public servants who "have the potential to reach the highest ranks". ... Excellency
Excellency is an honorific style given to certain high-level officers of a sovereign state, officials of an international organization, or members of an aristocracy. Once entitled to the title "Excellency", the holder usually retains the right to that courtesy throughout their lifetime, although in some cases the title is attached to a particular office, and is held only for the duration of that office. The Governor of the Virgin Islands is the representative of the British monarch in the United Kingdom's overseas territory of the British Virgin Islands. The governor is appointed by the monarch on the advice of the British government. The British Virgin Islands 2021 Commission of Inquiry was a public inquiry commissioned by the then Governor of the British Virgin Islands, Augustus Jaspert. The terms of reference were to make "a full, faithful and impartial inquiry into whether there was information that corruption, abuse of office or other serious dishonesty in relation to officials, whether statutory, elected or public, may have taken place in recent years; if there were such information, to consider the conditions which allowed such conduct to take place and whether they may still exist; and, if appropriate, to make independent recommendations with a view to improving the standards of governance and the operation of the agencies of law enforcement and justice in the Territory". Sir Gary Robert Hickinbottom (born 22 December 1955), is a retired British judge. In 2008, he became the fourth solicitor to be appointed a High Court judge (England and Wales), High Court judge, after Michael Sachs (judge), Michael Sachs in 1993, Lawrence Collins, Baron Collins of Mapesbury, Lawrence Collins in 2000, and Henry Hodge in 2004. Legal career He was admitted as a solicitor in 1981, and later became a partner at McKenna & Co (now part of CMS Cameron McKenna). He became a recorder (judge), recorder in 1994 and then a Circuit judge (UK), circuit judge in 2001. Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful Cape Verde hurricane that caused widespread destruction across its path in September 2017. Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the Leeward Islands on record, followed by Maria two weeks later.
