Athletics At The 2020 Summer Olympics – Women's Hammer Throw
The women's hammer throw event at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place on 1 and 3 August 2021 at the Japan National Stadium. Approximately 35 athletes competed; the exact number was dependent on how many nations use universality places to enter athletes in addition to the 32 qualifying through distance or ranking (no universality places were used in 2016). Summary Since 2009, the dominant name in women's hammer throwing has been Anita Włodarczyk. She holds the world record and the top six throws in history. She is the defending two time Olympic Champion and the 2017 World Champion. She underwent knee surgery and took much of the 2019 and 2020 seasons off. In her absence, DeAnna Price won in 2019. Japan National Stadium
The Japan National Stadium, officially named and formerly known as or , is a multi-purpose stadium used mostly for association football in Kasumigaoka, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Japan. IAAF World Rankings
The World Athletics Rankings are an individual athlete ranking system for the sport of athletics, managed by World Athletics. It is used to establish the number one athlete within an athletics event and to partially determine qualification into the World Athletics Championships and the athletics at the Summer Olympics. The rankings are published weekly by World Athletics on Wednesday. Wang Zheng (; born 14 December 1987) is a Chinese hammer thrower. Her personal best throw is 77.68 metres, achieved on 29 March 2014 in Chengdu, which was an Asian record. Annette Echikunwoke (born 29 July 1996) is a Nigerian-American hammer thrower who lives in Ohio, United States. She was due to represent Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics, but was disqualified due to the negligence of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. She holds the African area record in hammer throw, with a throw of 75.49m in Tucson in 2021. Early life Annette Echikunwoke started athletic throwing events in school after she won the shot put and discus throw at a sports day event, deciding that if she was good she might as well continue. Her cousin is actress Megalyn Echikunwoke. Career Echikunwoke is from Pickerington North in Ohio, and attended the University of Cincinnati for both her undergraduate and master's degree, where she was on the track and field team.
