The women's 5000 metres event at the 2016 Summer Olympics took place between 16–19 August at the Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Summary Almaz Ayana came into this race with the number two time in history, run just two and a half months earlier. That race in Rome came within a second and a half of the world record, so expectations were high. Ayana's strategy was well known to these competitors, she had used it to win the World Championships in 2015, the qualification to these Olympics and to win the 10,000 metres at these Olympics. In particular, Vivian Cheruiyot had experienced it first hand in that 10,000, being relegated to silver. Juliet Chekwel (born 25 May 1990) is a Ugandan long-distance runner. She competed in the 10,000 metres at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing placing 17th in a new national record of 32:20.95. She competed in the 5000 m and 10,000 m events at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Ababel Yeshaneh Birhane (born 22 July 1991) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner who competes in track, road and cross country events. She represented her country in the 10,000 metres at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, coming ninth, and ranked fifth in the world on time that year. She was a team silver medallist at the African Cross Country Championships in 2014 and finished 14th in the 5000 metres at the 2016 Olympic Games. Madeline Heiner (born 15 May 1987) is an Australian runner. She placed fourth in the women's 3000 metres steeplechase at the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Biography Heiner was born in Shellharbour, New South Wales on 15 May 1987. She took up running seriously in 2002; as a 17-year-old, she represented Australia in the 1500 metres at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Grosseto, but was eliminated in the heats. At the Commonwealth Youth Games in December 2004 she won gold in the 3000 metres and bronze in the 1500 metres. In 2005, she was Australian under-20 cross-country champion and placed 16th in the junior race at the World Cross Country Championships in Saint-Galmier. Susan Krumins (née Kuijken; born 8 July 1986) is a Dutch middle- and long-distance runner. She was the 5000 metres bronze medalist at the 2014 European Athletics Championships and also won a 3000 metres bronze at the 2014 IAAF Continental Cup. Kuijken has twice represented the Netherlands at the World Championships in Athletics, with her best finish being eighth in the 5000 m in 2013.
