Atelier 5
Atelier 5 is a modernist architectural company based in Switzerland. Atelier 5 founded in 1955 in Bern, Switzerland by the five architects Erwin Fritz, Samuel Gerber, Rolf Hesterberg, Hans Hostettler and Alfredo Pini and later joined by Niklaus Morgenthaler. The founding members met in the studio of Hans Brechbühler, a student of Le Corbusier in the 1930s. Samuel Gerber joined from the practice of landscape designer Burle Marx in Brazil. Roberto Burle Marx
Roberto Burle Marx (August 4, 1909 – June 4, 1994) was a Brazilian landscape architect (as well as a painter, print maker, ecologist, naturalist, artist and musician) whose designs of parks and gardens made him world-famous. He is accredited with having introduced modernist landscape architecture to Brazil. He was known as a modern nature artist and a public urban space designer. His work had a great influence on tropical garden design in the 20th century. Water gardens were a popular theme in his work. He was deftly able to transfer traditional artistic expressions such as graphic design, tapestry and folk art into his landscape designs. He also designed fabrics, jewellery and stage sets. Halen Estate
The Halen Estate (''Siedlung Halen'') is a housing development near Berne, Switzerland. It was designed and built by the Atelier 5 architectural partnership from 1957 to 1961. Located in a wooded area north of the city, the development is an important example of 20th century Modernist architecture (Structuralism), and as such is listed on the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites. Description Halen Estate comprises 81 privately owned houses arranged in three terraces. Built on a hillside, the terraces are reminiscent of steps. Structuralism is a movement in architecture and urban planning that evolved around the middle of the 20th century.
