Astafjord
Astafjord is a former municipality in the old Troms county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1926 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in the eastern part of the present-day municipality of Tjeldsund in Troms og Finnmark county. The municipality surrounded the Grovfjorden. The administrative center of the former municipality was the village of Grov where Astafjord Church is located. The Astafjorden ( strait) flowed along the northern part of the municipality and it was the namesake for the municipality. History Historically, Astafjord was a prestegjeld that encompassed a large part of southern Troms county, including the present-day municipalities of Bardu, Gratangen, Ibestad, Lavangen, Salangen, and most of Skånland. Astafjorden
Astafjorden is a fjord (more accurately, a strait) in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It flows through the municipalities of Salangen, Gratangen, Ibestad, and Tjeldsund. The long fjord flows from the Salangen fjord in the east to the Vågsfjorden in the west. The wide fjord separates the islands of Andørja and Rolla from the mainland. There are several small fjords that branch off this fjord including: Lavangen, Gratangen, Grovfjorden, and Salangen. Name The fjord (and the former municipality of Astafjord) were named after the old ''Ånstad'' farm (Old Norse: ''Arnastaðafjǫrðr''). The first element of the old name comes from the male name ''Arna'' or "Arne", the second element ''staða'' means "home" or "farm", and the last element ''fjǫrðr'' is identical with the word for "fjord". Astafjord Church
Astafjord Church ( no, Astafjord kirke) is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Tjeldsund Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the village of Grov. It is the church for the Astafjord parish which is part of the Trondenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, concrete church was built in a fan-shaped design in 1978 using plans drawn up by the architect Harald Hille. The church seats about 300 people. Skånland ( sme, Skánit) is a former municipality that was located in the old Troms county, Norway. The municipality existed from 1926 until its dissolution in 2020 when it was merged into Tjeldsund Municipality. It was part of the Central Hålogaland region, just southeast of the city of Harstad. Grov or Grovfjord is a village in Tjeldsund Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. The village is located east of the village of Tovik along the Grovfjorden at a very narrow point in the fjord. It is about southeast of the town of Harstad and about west of the town of Narvik. The Moelva and Gårdselva rivers flow through the village into the fjord. The village has a population (2017) of 400 which gives the village a population density of . Andørja is a former municipality in Troms county in Norway. The municipality existed from 1926 until its dissolution in 1964. It was located in the northeastern half of the present-day Ibestad Municipality. It encompassed the entire island of Andørja plus a number of other small islands and skerries surrounding it. The administrative centre was located at Engenes where the Andørja Church was also located.
