Aspire (sculpture)
''Aspire'' is a work of art, constructed on the Jubilee Campus of the University of Nottingham, in Nottingham, England. It is a tall, red and orange steel sculpture, and was, until overtaken by Anish Kapoor's ''Orbit'', the tallest free standing public work of art in the United Kingdom. It is taller than '' B of the Bang'' (which was dismantled in 2009), Nelson's Column, the ''Angel of the North'', and the Statue of Liberty (excluding the pedestal). The name ''Aspire'' was chosen after a competition to name the sculpture, which was open to staff and students at the university. Design and fabrication Aspire is a type of hyperboloid structure, designed by Ken Shuttleworth and Make Architects. It consists of an high concrete foundation and high red and orange steel tower. The sculpture weighs 854 tonnes, and cost £800,000, which was donated by an anonymous benefactor. The sculpture is lit during the hours of darkness. Ken Shuttleworth (architect)
Ken Shuttleworth (born September 1952 in Birmingham) is an English architect. Shuttleworth studied architecture at the Leicester School of Architecture, De Montfort University, where his fluid draftsmanship earned him the nickname "Ken the Pen". Shuttleworth became a partner at Foster and Partners where he worked on some of the world's most iconic buildings. He joined the practice in 1977, moving to Hong Kong in 1979 to oversee the design and construction of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation’s headquarters. Returning to the UK in 1986, he proceeded to build up a diverse portfolio of experience including the Carré d'Art in Nîmes, the ITN building in London, Cranfield University Library, Hong Kong’s Chek Lap Kok airport, the Al Faisaliah development in Riyadh, London’s Millennium Bridge, 30 St Mary Axe ('The Gherkin’) and City Hall. Hyperboloid structures are architectural structures designed using a hyperboloid in one sheet. Often these are tall structures, such as towers, where the hyperboloid geometry's structural strength is used to support an object high above the ground. Hyperboloid geometry is often used for decorative effect as well as structural economy. The first hyperboloid structures were built by Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov (1853–1939), including the Shukhov Tower in Polibino, Dankovsky District, Lipetsk Oblast, Russia. Properties Hyperbolic structures have a negative Gaussian curvature, meaning they curve inward rather than curving outward or being straight.
