The Armenian Olympic Committee (ARMNOC) ( hy, Հայաստանի ազգային օլիմպիական կոմիտե, translit=Hayastani Olimpiakan Komite) is responsible for Armenia's participation in the Olympic Games. It is headquartered in Yerevan. History The Armenian Olympic Committee was founded in 1990. The committee became a member of the International Olympic Committee in 1993 and subsequently became a member of the European Olympic Committees, among other international sports organizations. Hripsime Jilavyan
Hripsime ( hy, Հռիփսիմէ, died c. 290), also called Rhipsime, Ripsime, Ripsima, Ripsimia, Ripsimus, Arbsima or Arsema () was a martyr of Roman origin; she and her companions in martyrdom are venerated as some of the first Christian martyrs of Armenia. Biography According to legend, Hripsime was possibly of noble birth. She belonged to a community of virgins in Rome, numbering 35 under the leadership of Gayane. She was known to be extremely beautiful, and attracted the notice of Diocletian. To avoid his advances she, along with her community, fled the city, going first to Alexandria before settling in Vagharshapat. The varying accounts of her martyrdom diverge at this point. One story indicates that Hripsime again was noticed for her beauty, this time by King Tiridates III, who proceeded to pursue her. Gyumri
Gyumri ( hy, Գյումրի, ) is an urban municipal community and the second-largest city in Armenia, serving as the administrative center of Shirak Province in the northwestern part of the country. By the end of the 19th century, when the city was known as Alexandropol,; hy, Ալեքսանդրապոլ it became the largest city of Russian-ruled Eastern Armenia with a population above that of Yerevan. Albert Azaryan
Albert Azaryan ( hy, Ալբերտ Ազարյան; born 11 February 1929) is a former Soviet Armenian artistic gymnast who competed internationally representing the Soviet Union. He is the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Champion on the still rings. Azaryan is the first gymnast to become an Olympic Champion in Rings twice, a feat that Akinori Nakayama would accomplish twelve years later and that no one else has matched since. He is the first person to do one of the rings most famous variations of the Iron Cross called the Azaryan Cross (not to be confused with the Azarian Roll to Cross), which incorporates a quarter turn to the side. Early life Azaryan was born on 11 February 1929 in Gharakilisa, Transcaucasian SFSR. His father died when he was 14. Azaryan had to leave school and work as an ironsmith to support his family.
