The Armenian Basketball Federation ( hy, Հայաստանի բասկետբոլի ֆեդերացիա), also known as the Basketball Federation of Armenia (BFA), is the national governing body of basketball in Armenia. The Armenian Basketball Federation operates both the men's national team and the women's national team. History The Armenian Basketball Federation (BFA) was established in 1989 and is headquartered in Yerevan, Armenia. The BFA joined the International Basketball Federation in 1992 and holds full membership in FIBA Europe. Since 2006, Hrachya Rostomyan has been president of the BFA. The BFA manages Armenia's basketball participation in both World and European competitions. In 2016, the BFA organized Armenia's first competition in the FIBA European Championship for Small Countries, with the Armenian team winning the tournament that year. Basketball
Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary objective of shooting a basketball (approximately in diameter) through the defender's hoop (a basket in diameter mounted high to a backboard at each end of the court, while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their own hoop. EuroBasket
EuroBasket, also commonly referred to as the European Basketball Championship, is the main international basketball competition that is contested quadrennially, by the senior men's national teams that are governed by FIBA Europe, which is the European zone within the International Basketball Federation. The competition was first held in 1935. The former Soviet Union holds the record for most gold medals with a total of 14. The tournament is generally held in August or September, in the offseason of major club competitions. The current defending champion is Spain, who won the 2022 title. A wide array of sports are played in Armenia. Popular sports in Armenia include football, basketball, volleyball, and ice hockey. The Armenia men's national under-16 basketball team is a national basketball team of Armenia, administered by the Basketball Federation of Armenia. It represents the country in international men's under-16 basketball competitions. On 27 July 2007, in the first game of the Division B of the FIBA Europe Championship, Armenia was defeated by Bosnia and Herzegovina by 236–27, becoming this game as one of the highest margin wins ever in any international game. Armenian Diaspora
The Armenian diaspora refers to the communities of Armenians outside Armenia and other locations where Armenians are considered an indigenous population. Since antiquity, Armenians have established communities in many regions throughout the world. However, the modern Armenian diaspora was largely formed as a result of World War I, when the Armenian genocide committed by the Ottoman Empire forced Armenians living in their homeland to flee or risk being killed. Another wave of emigration started with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. EuroBasket 2022 Qualification
The EuroBasket 2022 qualification was a basketball competition that was played from November 2017 to February 2021, to determine the 20 FIBA Europe nations who would join the automatically qualified co-hosts Czech Republic, Georgia, Italy, and Germany at the EuroBasket 2022 finals tournament. Pre-Qualifiers The EuroBasket 2022 Pre-Qualifiers were played by 17 teams over three rounds. The best eight teams advanced to the EuroBasket 2022 Qualifiers. First round The pre-qualifiers first round was played by nine teams: Five eliminated in the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup pre-qualifiers, and four teams that did not enter in those qualifiers.
