Armand Léon Annet
Armand Léon Annet (5 June 1888 – 25 April 1973) was a French colonial governor for various colonies in the French colonial empire. Biography Armand Léon Annet was born in Paris on 1888, in Rue de Babylone. Annet was Governor of French Somaliland from 1935 to 1937. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Dahomey from 1938 to 1940. In 1940, Annet sided with Vichy France after the Fall of France. As the Vichy Governor-General of Madagascar from 1941 to 1942, Annet was involved in the Battle of Madagascar.Jennings, Eric T. Ihosy
Ihosy is a city (commune urbaine) with 283,047 inhabitants (2015) in Ihorombe Region in central south Madagascar. Ihosy is the capital of Ihorombe Region, as well as of the district of Ihosy. Geography Ihosy is an important crosspoint for the southern part of Madagascar. It is crossed by the Route nationale 7 from the capital Antananarivo (600 km) (- Fianarantsoa (191 km) to Toliara (325 km) and startpoint of the Route nationale 13 to Tolagnaro and Route nationale 27 to Farafangana (271 km). List Of Colonial Governors Of Madagascar
In 1882, the French Third Republic established a protectorate over the Merina Kingdom on the island of Madagascar, with the consent of the United Kingdom. The French position on the island was solidified by the First Madagascar expedition (May 1883 to December 1885, the first phase of the Franco-Hova Wars). The protectorate lasted until 1897, when the French abolished the monarchy and turned the island into a colony, following the Second Madagascar expedition (December 1894 to September 1895, the second and last phase of the Franco-Hova Wars). Afterwards, Madagascar remained part of the French colonial empire until 1958, when the autonomous Malagasy Republic was established. The Republic gained full independence in 1960. Battle Of Madagascar
The Battle of Madagascar (5 May – 6 November 1942) was a British campaign to capture the Vichy French-controlled island Madagascar during World War II. The seizure of the island by the British was to deny Madagascar's ports to the Imperial Japanese Navy and to prevent the loss or impairment of the Allied shipping routes to India, Australia and Southeast Asia. It began with Operation Ironclad, the seizure of the port of Diego-Suarez (now Antsiranana) near the northern tip of the island, on 5 May 1942. A subsequent campaign to secure the entire island, Operation Stream Line Jane, was opened on 10 September. The Allies broke into the interior, linking up with forces on the coast and secured the island by the end of October. Fighting ceased and an armistice was granted on 6 November. The French colonial empire () comprised the overseas colonies, protectorates and mandate territories that came under French rule from the 16th century onward. A distinction is generally made between the "First French Colonial Empire", that existed until 1814, by which time most of it had been lost or sold, and the "Second French Colonial Empire", which began with the conquest of Algiers in 1830. At its apex between the two world wars, the second French colonial empire was the second-largest colonial empire in the world behind the British Empire.
