List Of Colonial Governors Of Madagascar
In 1882, the French Third Republic established a protectorate over the Merina Kingdom on the island of Madagascar, with the consent of the United Kingdom. The French position on the island was solidified by the First Madagascar expedition (May 1883 to December 1885, the first phase of the Franco-Hova Wars). The protectorate lasted until 1897, when the French abolished the monarchy and turned the island into a colony, following the Second Madagascar expedition (December 1894 to September 1895, the second and last phase of the Franco-Hova Wars). Afterwards, Madagascar remained part of the French colonial empire until 1958, when the autonomous Malagasy Republic was established. The Republic gained full independence in 1960. Joseph Gallieni
Joseph Simon Gallieni (24 April 1849 – 27 May 1916) was a French soldier, active for most of his career as a military commander and administrator in the French colonies. Gallieni is infamous in Madagascar as the French military leader who exiled Queen Ranavalona III and abolished the 350-year-old monarchy on the island. He was recalled from retirement at the outbreak of the First World War. As Military Governor of Paris he played an important role in the First Battle of the Marne, when Maunoury's Sixth Army, which was under his command, attacked the German west flank. A small portion of its strength was rushed to the front in commandeered Paris taxicabs. From October 1915 he served as Minister of War, resigning from that post in March 1916 after criticizing the performance of the French Commander-in-Chief, Joseph Joffre (formerly his subordinate, earlier in their careers), during the German attack on Verdun. Hippolyte Laroche (26 January 1848 - 14 September 1914) was a French naval officer, colonial administrator and politician. While Resident General of Madagascar he succeeded in abolishing slavery. Career Hippolyte Laroche was born on 26 January 1848 in Lyon, France. His father was a colonel of the Engineers. Laroche attended Naval Academy and became a naval officer. He was then made prefect of Charente, Algiers, Loire and Haute-Garonne. Laroche was appointed Resident General in Madagascar, and arrived at Tananarive on 16 January 1896. Paul Anthelme Bourde was appointed Secretary General of Madagascar in 1895. Bourde left France for Madagascar in January 1896. He soon fell out with Laroche, who accused him of trying to usurp his position. In his short term of office, Laroche succeeded in passing a law that abolished slavery. Maurice Bompard (politician)
Maurice Bompard (17 May 1854 – 7 April 1935) was a pre-WWI French diplomat and later a politician. Career Bompard was Resident-General for Madagascar from 1889 to 1890. He was head of the Consular department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Quai d′Orsay), when in September 1902 he was appointed French Ambassador to Russia. In 1909 he was transferred to the post of French Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, serving as such until 1914. After the end of the First World War, he was elected a Senator of Moselle in January 1920, stepping down in 1933, before his death two years later.
