Argyle, Utah
Argyle is a ghost town located in Rich County, Utah, United States. Lying some southwest of Randolph on Big Creek, it was inhabited from approximately 1875–1915. History ''Circa'' 1875, John Kennedy, Sr. (the great-grandfather of David M. Kennedy) settled the area with his three sons (one of whom, John Kennedy, Jr. later served in the Utah State legislature), who built homes and ranches along the various branches of Big Creek. Within a few years several other Mormon families moved in and established a local church group. The town became known as ''Kennedyville''. In 1885 the community organized a school system, and the mostly Scottish American residents voted to rename the town ''Argyle'' in honor of Argyll, Scotland. School was originally held in Kennedy's home until a one-room brick schoolhouse was built in 1895. The cold climate made farming difficult, and the population grew slowly. Rich County, Utah
Rich County is a county in the U.S. state of Utah. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 2,264, making it the third-least populous county in Utah. Its county seat is Randolph, and the largest town is Garden City. The county was created in 1864. It was named for an early LDS apostle, Charles C. Rich. The southern half of Bear Lake and the Bear Lake Valley lies on the northern edge of the county. The Bear River Valley lies in most of the eastern portion of the county. The elevation of these valleys is close to , and the rest of the county is covered by mountains, including the Bear River Range. Argyll (; archaically Argyle, in modern Gaelic, ), sometimes called Argyllshire, is a historic county and registration county of western Scotland. Randolph is a town in Rich County, Utah, United States. As of the 2010 census, the town population was 464. It is the county seat of Rich County. Randolph had the highest percentage of people of any city in the country vote for George W. Bush in the 2004 election, at 95.6% Randolph's municipal classification was officially changed from a city to a town on January 1, 2009. The controversial WWASPS boarding school Old West Academy (formerly Majestic Ranch Academy) is located just outside Randolph. John Kennedy (Utah Politician)
John Kennedy Jr. (1847–1928) was an American politician in Utah and leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He was the bishop of the Argyle Ward of the LDS Church in Argyle, Utah, during its entire existence. Kennedy was also a member of the Utah State Legislature, the Rich County Commission, and a justice of the peace. Kennedy was born 12 October 1847 in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, to John Kennedy and his wife Elizabeth Black. In the 1860s, he joined the LDS Church along with the rest of his family and in 1870 sailed to America on the ship ''Colorado'' with his brother James. The Kennedy brothers worked as coal miners in Pennsylvania and then in Almy, Wyoming. Soon after arriving in Almy, Kennedy married Hannah Simpson. John and Hannah became the parents of 16 children.
