Area Code 878
Area code 878 is an overlay area code in Southwestern Pennsylvania, centered in Pittsburgh. It simultaneously overlays the region's two existing area codes, 412 and 724, making ten-digit dialing mandatory in the Pittsburgh area. 412 had served southwestern Pennsylvania for 41 years before 724 was created for most of the old 412 territory outside of Pittsburgh in 1998. Bell Atlantic (now part of Verizon), the main telephone provider in the area, wanted to implement 724 as an overlay to spare residents and businesses the burden of changing their numbers. However, overlays were still a new concept at the time, and met with considerable resistance due to the need for ten-digit dialing. Thus, the proposal was changed to a geographic split. Within two years, however, both 412 and 724 were on the verge of exhaustion. Overlays had gained more acceptance by then, so 878 was implemented as an overlay. It came into effect on August 17, 2001. Although ten-digit dialing has been mandato ...

Area Code 412
Area code 412 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The numbering plan area (NPA) comprises the city of Pittsburgh, most of surrounding Allegheny County, and small portions of Washington and Westmoreland counties. The area code was one of the original North American area codes created in 1947, when it was assigned to the entire southwestern corner of the state. History When the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) created the first nationwide telephone numbering plan for the continental United States and Canada in 1947, Pennsylvania was divided into four numbering plan areas. Area code 412 was assigned to the southwestern part of the state, from Butler County to the West Virginia border. On February 1, 1998, nearly all of the old 412 territory outside of Allegheny County was split off and received area code 724, surrounding 412. Bell Atlantic, the main telephone provider at the time in Pennsylvania, ...

Area Code 724
Area code 724 is a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania telephone area code in western and southwestern Pennsylvania, including most of the suburbs of Pittsburgh. It was split from area code 412 on February 1, 1998. Originally, Bell Atlantic wanted to implement 724 as an overlay of 412. However, overlays were still a new concept at the time, and met with some resistance due to the requirement for ten-digit dialing. For this reason, 724 was implemented as a split, with nearly all of the old 412 territory outside Allegheny County getting the new area code, making it one of the six pairs of "doughnut area codes" in the numbering plan. Within only two years, both 724 and 412 were on the verge of exhaustion due to the Pittsburgh area's rapid growth and the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. By this time, overlays had gained more acceptance, and area code 878 was implemented as an overlay for both the 412 and 724 territories on August 17, 2001. Since that date, ten-digit dialing ...

Ten-digit Dialing
Ten-digit dialing is a telephone dialing procedure in the countries and territories that are members of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). It is the practice of including the area code of a telephone number when dialing to initiate a telephone call. When necessary, the ten-digit number may be prefixed with the trunk code ''1'', which is referred to as ''1+10-digit dialing'' or ''national format''. History The implementation and expansion of the North American Numbering Plan between 1947 and 1992 preserved a long-standing practice in the United States and Canada that callers should only need to dial the local seven-digit telephone number when placing a call within the caller's exchange area or within the home numbering plan area (NPA). In seven-digit dialing. callers dialed the three-digit central office code and the four-digit station number of the telephone subscriber to reach in the same numbering plan area. Dialing of an area code before the telephone number, referred to ...

In 1997, Bell Atlantic expanded into New York and the New England states by merging with fellow Baby Bell NYNEX. Telephone Prefix
A telephone prefix is the first set of digits after the country, and area codes of a telephone number; in the North American Numbering Plan countries (country code +# ), it is the first three digits of a seven-digit phone number, 3-3-4 scheme. In other countries both the prefix and the number may have different lengths. It shows which exchange the remaining numbers refer to. A full telephone number is usually made up of a country code (required for international calls only), area code (required for calls between telephone areas), prefix, and subscriber number. Some places restrict certain prefixes to fax numbers or cell phones only; in other places such dedicated prefixes are not used. As telephone technology advanced, the precise significance of the prefix became blurred in many places; for instance, ''485'' in London, UK, was once the GULliver exchange, but now 44-20-''7485-''xxxx is just considered one of many number blocks served by the CLKEN Kentish Town exchange.
