Archibald Lamont (minister)
Archibald Lamont (1864—1933) was a Presbyterian minister, social activist and mayor of Durban. Lamont was born in Port Bannatyne, Bute, Scotland, he was the son of Alexander Lamont and Sarah Graham. Lamont graduated with a bachelor of divinity degree and later obtained a master of arts degree from the University of Glasgow in 1888. On the 15 December 1889 he was ordained as Presbyterian minister in Glasgow and inducted as a missionary of the Presbyterian Church of England at Singapore. He learned some Chinese language for a few months in Amoy, China, after which he conducted services in the Hokkien language in Singapore and Malaya. Lamont became more interested in education, he gave up preaching and in 1891, he founded the Singapore Chinese Educational Institute in his own home to educate Chinese men for leadership. Port Bannatyne ( gd, Port MhicEamailinn) is a coastal village on the Isle of Bute, Firth of Clyde, Scotland that is home to many steamers. Port Bannatyne developed into the 1900s as a quieter and more unusual alternative to Rothesay. It is a popular harbour, with a small yacht marina and boatyard and an unusual 13-hole golf course rather than the standard 18. Geography Port Bannatyne lies on the Firth of Clyde, approximately north of Rothesay on the Scottish Isle of Bute. Rhubodach is a further north away on the A886 and a Caledonian MacBrayne ferry service to the Cowal peninsula. This ferry runs every 30 minutes during the day. Xiamen ( , ; ), also known as Amoy (, from Hokkien pronunciation ), is a sub-provincial city in southeastern Fujian, People's Republic of China, beside the Taiwan Strait. Hokkien
The Hokkien () variety of Chinese is a Southern Min language native to and originating from the Minnan region, where it is widely spoken in the south-eastern part of Fujian in southeastern mainland China. Tarkastad
Tarkastad is a Karoo semi-urban settlement situated on the banks Tarka River in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Tarkastad is on a plain to the north of the Winterberg mountain range on the R61 between Cradock and Queenstown and only three hours from Port Elizabeth. The name Tarkastad is believed to come from the Khoi-Khoi word ''Traka'' (meaning women) or the Celtic word ''Tarka'' (meaning otter) and the Afrikaans word ''Stad'' (meaning city). The fact that the town is overlooked by Martha and Mary; two peaks which look like two women resting after a hard day's work, also lends to the name.
