Aquilonia, Campania
Aquilonia is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Avellino, part of the Campania region of southern Italy. It is situated in mountainous terrain in the eastern part of the province, at an elevation of . History The Lombards called the town Carbonara or Carunar, supposedly because a major local occupation was charcoal making. In 1861, after the unification of Italy, the town was renamed ''Aquilonia'' based on a 16th-century assumption that this was the site of the Battle of Aquilonia between the Rome and the Samnites. On 23 July 1930 a major earthquake destroyed the town, and it was rebuilt at a higher location nearby. Geography Located in the eastern side of the province, close to Basilicata, Aquilonia borders with the municipalities of Bisaccia, Calitri, Lacedonia, Melfi, Monteverde and Rionero in Vulture. Bisaccia
Bisaccia is an Italian town and comune, population 4,382, situated in the province of Avellino. It borders the communes of Andretta, Aquilonia, Calitri, Guardia Lombardi, Lacedonia, Scampitella and Vallata. Bisaccia has its own Bisaccese dialect. History Bisaccia's Castle, made by the Lombards, was repaired by Emperor Frederick II, who went to hunt in the woods near Bisaccia. Famous writers as Torquato Tasso and Francesco de Sanctis visited Bisaccia. After the 1930 Irpinia earthquake, a new town was built near the historic centre. Like other remote towns, Bisaccia offers houses for 1 euro on the condition that the buyers restore the houses. Ecclesiastical History It was a bishopric from before 1100. Caramagna Piemonte is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Cuneo in the Italian region Piedmont, located about south of Turin and about northeast of Cuneo. Caramagna Piemonte borders the following municipal lands: Carmagnola, Racconigi, and Sommariva del Bosco. History The name of Caramagna appears for the first time in 1026. The foundation of the Monastery of Santa Maria by the marquis of Turin Olderico greatly increased the power of the country, which extended its interests around the southern Piedmont and Liguria. The monastery was entrusted to the care of the nuns of the Order of St. Benedict; the same order was later replaced by the equivalent male order and later by the Girolamiti. Rionero In Vulture
Rionero in Vulture ( aae, Arrionero) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Potenza, in the southern Italian region of Basilicata. It is located on the slopes of Monte Vulture in the northern part of the region. The village was founded and historically inhabited by the Arbëreshë minority, who no longer retain the language and the cultural Arbëreshe heritage. History The first historical mention of the hamlet of ''Saint Maria di Rivonigro'' goes back to 1152, when it is mentioned as a feudal possession of the bishop of Rapolla. Lacedonia
Lacedonia ( Irpinian: ) is a ''comune'' in the province of Avellino, Campania region, southern Italy, overlooking the Osento River which flows into the Lago di San Pietro (Lake of Saint Peter), an artificial lake. The town is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ariano Irpino-Lacedonia. History Lacedonia was first called Akudunniad by the Osci and then Erdonea. After many destructions, it was rebuilt by the Romans, with the name of Aquilonia, and was part of the Tribe of Galeria. It was later called Al Cidonia and then Cedogna until 1800. Finally it became Lacedonia. In 517 AD it was given to the Benedictine monks by the Emperor Justinian. Calitri
Calitri ( la, Caletrium or ; Irpino: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Avellino, Campania, Italy. Overview Calitri is in Campania near the borders of the regions of Apulia and Basilicata. It is approximately above sea level so on even on the hottest day there is generally a breeze. The Antico Borgo is in the oldest section of the town, the centro storico, at the top of which are the remains of a castle which predates the 12th century. The Borgo itself is a labyrinth of historic houses which have, over the centuries, been built into the hillside. Stone and marble stairs, frequently under old stone arches, connect the streets. Calitri suffered a devastating 1980 Irpinia earthquake, earthquake in 1980 and has only been partially rebuilt. The Castello at the top of its distinctive cone shaped hilltop is very impressive for its strong architectural forms.
