Antakalnis (''literally'' lt, 'the place on hills', adapted in pl, Antokol) is an eldership in the Vilnius city municipality, Lithuania. Antakalnis is one of the oldest, and largest historical suburbs of Vilnius City. It is in the eastern section of Vilnius, along the left bank of the Neris River, with the river running along the whole western side of the district. The Antakalnis eldership is the second-largest in Vilnius, with an area of . One of the greatest Lithuanian Baroque masterpieces, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, is in Antakalnis, as is Sapieha Palace (''Sapiegų rūmai''). Sapieha Palace is surrounded by the only surviving Baroque-style park in Lithuania, which contains the oldest linden tree in Vilnius. Antakalnis Cemetery
Antakalnis Cemetery ( lt, Antakalnio kapinės, pl, Cmentarz na Antokolu, be, Антокальскія могілкі), sometimes referred as Antakalnis Military Cemetery, is an active cemetery in the Antakalnis district of Vilnius, Lithuania. It was established in 1809. Soldier burials 12 of the 14 victims of attacks during the January Events of 1991 by forces of the Soviet Army, as well as the Medininkai Massacre, are buried here. Other graves include those of Polish soldiers who perished in 1919–20; a memorial of Lithuanian as well as German and Russian soldiers fallen in World War I; and Red Army soldiers of World War II (constructed in 1951, rebuilt 1976–84). In 2003, more than 3,000 French and other soldiers of the Grande Armée of Napoleon I who took part in the 1812 invasion of Russia were reburied at the cemetery, after their bodies were excavated some two years prior from French-dug trenches which were used by the victorious Russians as mass graves due to the froz ...

Sapieha Palace In Vilnius
Sapieha Palace ( lt, Sapiegų rūmai, pl, Pałac Sapiehów w Wilnie) is a High Baroque palace in Sapiegos str., Antakalnis district of Vilnius, Lithuania. It is the only surviving of several palaces formerly belonging to the Sapieha family in the city. The palace is surrounded by the remains of the 17th-century formal park, with parterres, ponds, and avenues. The impressive Baroque gate secures the entrance to the park from Antakalnis street and the other gate is on the opposite side of the park, near the palace. Both of them were restored in 2012. History The palace, ordered by Great Hetman of Lithuania Jan Kazimierz Sapieha the Younger was built in Baroque style in 1691–1697 in place of the former wooden mansion of Lew Sapieha (who died here in 1633). Botanical Garden of Vilnius University ( lt, Vilniaus universiteto botanikos sodas) is a botanical garden situated in Vilnius, Lithuania. History The garden was established by professor Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert of Vilnius University in 1781. In 1832 the Vilnius University and Botanical Garden were closed. In 1919, the Botanical Garden of the Polish Stefan Batory University was started in a new location, in Vingis (known as Zakret at that time). In 1975 territory of the garden was expanded.
