Anna Jaquez
Anna Jaquez (born 1953) is an American artist, art professor and metalsmith. She lives and works in El Paso, Texas. Jaquez is an art professor at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). She has work in the permanent collection of the El Paso Museum of Art. Early life Jaquez' father was a builder who added onto their house frequently. Jaquez later attended the University of Texas at El Paso. Jaquez still draws inspiration from the use of odd materials that her father incorporated into his building. Work Jaquez' work explores the interplay of small, detailed items within larger scale structures. Gaspar Enriquez, who Jaquez met as a graduate student at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) in the late 1980s, was an influence on her as a teacher. She also interprets the poetry of Pat Mora in her metal work. Metalsmith
A metalsmith or simply smith is a craftsperson fashioning useful items (for example, tools, kitchenware, tableware, jewelry, armor and weapons) out of various metals. Smithing is one of the oldest list of metalworking occupations, metalworking occupations. Shaping metal with a hammer (forging) is the archetypical component of smithing. Often the hammering is done while the metal is hot, having been heated in a forge. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a public research university in El Paso, Texas. It is a member of the University of Texas System. UTEP is the second-largest university in the United States to have a majority Mexican American student population (about 80%) after the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Founded in 1959, The El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA) is located in downtown El Paso, Texas. First accredited in 1972, it is the only accredited art museum within a 250-mile radius and serves approximately 100,000 visitors per year. A new building was completed in 1998. Gaspar Enriquez
Gaspar Enriquez (born 1942) is an American artist known for creating portraits of people of Chicano heritage. Early life Enriquez was born in 1942 in the El Segundo Barrio neighborhood of El Paso, Texas. He attended the University of Texas at El Paso, graduating with a bachelor's degree in arts education. He then went on to attend New Mexico State University, where he studied metalwork and graduated with a master's degree. Career Enriquez work was inspired by the students at Bowie High School in El Paso, Texas, where he was a teacher. His influences included Mel Casas and Luis Jimenez, both artist from El Paso. His pieces are usually made with acrylic paint on a paper, canvas and board surface. A 2016 portrait of Rudolfo Anaya created by Enriquez is held in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C. Pat Mora
Pat Mora (born January 19, 1942 in El Paso, Texas) is an American poet and author of books for adults, teens and children. Her grandparents came to El Paso from northern Mexico. A graduate of the University of Texas at El Paso, she received Honorary Doctorates from North Carolina State University and SUNY Buffalo, and is an Honorary Member of the American Library Association. A literacy advocate, in 1996, she foundeChildren's Day, Book Day in Spanish, El día de los niños, El día de los libros now celebrated across the country each year on April 30.
